Spanish PM Sanchez Condemns ‘Unacceptable’ Incident at Spain-Egypt Match

Rabat – Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez has posted on X his complete rejection of the racist chants and the lack of respect some Spanish fans showed in the friendly match against Egypt.

“What happened yesterday in Cornella is unacceptable and must not be repeated. We cannot allow an uncivilized minority to tarnish the image of Spain – a diverse and tolerant country – as well as its national team and its fans,” Sanchez said.

“I extend my full support to the athletes who were subjected to this, and my greetings to everyone who contributes with respect to making our country better.”

This statement comes after Spanish fans chanted racist, anti-Muslim slogans during the match and booed the playing of the Egyptian national anthem.

The shameful behavior has raised broader concerns about intolerance and Islamophobia in certain segments of Spanish society.

Following the misappropriate act, the Egyptian Football Association also condemned the incident, while players subjected to the abuse publicly spoke out against what they described as an inexcusable and unjustifiable show of racist bigotry.

Catalonia’s regional police have opened an investigation, and FIFA’s disciplinary bodies are reportedly reviewing the match.

There have been reports of potential sanctions, including fines or stadium measures, if the Spanish federation is found responsible.
