Rabat – New data from the Moroccan Exchange Office indicate that remittances from the Moroccan diaspora reached MAD 111.53 billion at the end of November 2025.

This amounts to over $12.23 billion when converted to US dollars, with MAD 10 showing an equivalence of $1.10 as of January 1, 2026.

The number is significant as remittances from Moroccans residing abroad in November 2024 reached MAD 109.8 billion, or $12 billion. This means that the figures reached in November 2025 show an increase of 1.6% year-on-year.

Remittances from Moroccans abroad, also known as MREs, are a key pillar contributing to Morocco’s economy.

In 2023, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita said remittances transferred from Africa’s diaspora are “the most expensive in the world, averaging 8%, while it averages 6% in other regions.”

He added that for each $200 a member of the African diaspora transfers, Africa pays $16, while Asia pays less than $10.”

Remittances also played an important role in cushioning social security, offering a reliable source of income, Bourita argued.

Abdellatif Jouahri, Morocco’s Central Bank Governor, echoed the same remarks, emphasizing the importance of remittances as they provide a source of livelihood for many families.

Beyond remittances, the Exchange office announced a 20.4% increase in trade deficit, which reached MAD 328.8 billion $ or 36 billion. It attributed the increase to the rise in goods imports and exports.
