Rabat – The Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Morocco assigned its committees and delegates to sight the crescent moon for Ramadan 2026 on Wednesday, February 18.

The ministry asked all experts to inform its department of the results of the crescent sighting.

“The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs informs the honorable judges and the delegates of Islamic affairs across the kingdom that the observation of the crescent moon marking the beginning of the blessed month of Ramadan for the year 1447 AH will take place on the evening of Wednesday,” the ministry said.

The sighting will take place on the 29th of Sha’ban, the month preceding Ramadan, corresponding to February 18.

The ministry requests its delegates observing the moon to report whether the crescent has been sighted or not using the following phone numbers:

    0537-76-11-45

    0537-76-09-32

    0537-76-05-49

Astronomers expect Morocco to announce Thursday as the first day of Ramadan.

During the holy month, Muslims fast from all food and water between dawn and sunset.

Fasting also prohibits sexual activity and chewing gum. Only people with chronic illnesses and prescribed medications are exempt from fasting.

Children who have not reached puberty are also exempt. In Morocco, some children fast during Ramadan even before puberty, especially during Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree.

Laylat al-Qadr is the most sacred night in Ramadan, commemorating when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

In addition to fasting, Ramadan is also an opportunity for Muslims to engage in spiritual reflection, including Taraweeh, extra Sunni prayers performed throughout the month.

After breaking the fast, men and women of all ages head to mosques across the country to perform the Taraweeh prayers.
