During a celebration in Rabat, British Ambassador Alex Pinfield OBE has celebrated Moroccan Chevening scholars, calling them the country’s “future leaders.”
The ambassador told Morocco World News today that he is honored to host the reception to welcome home the scholas that studied their master’s degrees in the UK as part of the Chevening Programme, which is funded by the British government.
“Over the years, we’ve got now 250 Moroccans who’ve been able to take advantage of the Chevening programme. And these are Moroccans who are going to be the future leaders of Morocco. And it’s our very great privilege to be able to have them as part of our Chevening programme and to welcome home the scholars today,” the ambassador told MWN.
Pinfield OBE stressed how he enjoyed hearing Moroccan students’ stories and their life in the UK, commending the expansion of British education and English language in Morocco.
“As the British ambassador, this is fantastic to see. And if you’re interested in a master’s programme in the UK, then do watch out for when we open applications for the next round,” he said.
In a recent interview with MWN, Pinfield OBE stressed how education is one of the priorities in sectors in which the two countries cooperate.
He told MWN that he constantly meets youth that learned English and want to have the experience of an English education, pointing to the growing number of British schools and universities opening campuses in the North African country, specifically in Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, and Marrakech.
“We’ve got programmes… to work with Moroccan teachers of English to help expand the ability and the capacity for English language teaching,” he added.
Earlier this month, British international education provider London Academy announced the launch of its third campus in Morocco. The opening reflects a “significant” milestone in bilateral ties between the two countries – especially in education, the academy stressed.
The school will open in Dar Bouazza, in Casablanca. The school’s doors will open for students in September in the fall term.
The London Academy opened its first campus in Casablanca in 2017, and later its second in Rabat in 2020.
English proficiency is growing in Morocco, but observers and reports indicate the need for more efforts for further inclusion.
The EF English Proficiency Index featured Morocco at the 68th place globally with a score of 492 in November last year.
