Many travellers are surprised how many options New Year’s Eve Morocco actually offers. Even though Morocco is an Arab country and follows a different official calendar, New Year’s Eve is still widely celebrated by locals, expats, and visitors. You will not see public fireworks, alcohol consumption in the streets, or large midnight crowd gatherings, as these traditions are not part of local culture. Celebrations take place in restaurants, hotels, private venues, cafés, and at organised events.

Always, the New Year’s Eve in Morocco also falls during the busiest tourism week of the year. The Christmas and New Year holidays attract the highest number of travellers, and many hotels, desert camps, drivers, and restaurants are booked months in advance. Prices in Marrakech and other popular cities increase, including riads, desert camps, and New Year’s Eve dinners. If you want to celebrate New Year in Morocco, reserve at least six months ahead. Alcohol should only be consumed inside licensed venues. Also, don’t forget, Morocco also has winter time, so daytime can be warm, around +20C, but evenings and nights can drop to +4C, so bring warm clothes. For sun lovers, then head more to the coastline like Agadir, Taghazout, there, if the weather is nice, you can even have a little swim (still cold, but manageable).

Below are the main options for where to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Morocco in 2026.

    1. Marrakech: For travellers who want a full programme

Marrakech remains the most popular destination for New Year’s Eve Morocco celebrations. The city offers organised dinners, shows, DJs, belly-dancing programmes, and late-night options. Travellers are often surprised by how expensive New Year’s Eve is in Marrakech. Even a standard dinner without alcohol can cost around 300 euros per person. Most venues publish fixed menus with live entertainment.

For New Years Eve in Marrakech, many well-known places offers belly dancers, live shows, DJs, and musicians. For the Marrakech new town vibes, for a dinner with show check Comptoir Darna, Azar, Buddha-Bar, Epicurien, Lotus. Bo-Zon, Dar Soukkar. If you prefer a calmer fine dining with some live music and programme, check such restaurants as Italian La Tratoria, Grand Cafe de La Poste etc. You can also look at venues in La Palmeraie or head slightly outside the city to the Agafay Desert for a quieter dinner setting. And of course, famous rooftops in Marrakch Medina like Kabana rooftop, Riad EL Fenn rooftop, Dar Dar rooftop and others.

Travellers are often surprised by how expensive New Year’s Eve is in Marrakech. Even a standard dinner without alcohol can cost around 300 euros per person. Most venues publish fixed menus with live entertainment.

Several well-known places include Comptoir Darna in the New Town, which offers ballet dancers, live shows, and DJs. Cabana Rooftop and Buddha-Bar are other options with full programmes. Mid-range restaurants without large shows are good alternatives if you prefer a simpler dinner. You can also look at venues in La Palmeraie or head slightly outside the city to the Agafay Desert for a quieter dinner setting.

    2. Essaouira: Laid-back coastal New Year’s Eve

Essaouira is only three hours away from Marrakech. It is a relaxed town on the Atlantic coastline with a historic Medina and an active fisherman port. This makes it a calmer option for New Year’s Eve Morocco, with smaller programmes, live music, and more moderate dinner prices.

Places such as Ocean Vagabond, Dar Baba, and several rooftop venues offer DJ sets or small entertainment options. Essaouira suits travellers who prefer a chilled evening and the possibility of spending both the last day of the year and the first morning of the new one on the beach.

    3. Sahara Desert: Multi-day New Year’s Eve experience

Celebrating New Year’s Eve in the Sahara Desert is one of the most memorable New Years Eve Morocco options, but it requires planning. The most popular area is Merzouga, known for the Erg Chebbi dunes. Reaching Merzouga takes around nine hours of driving from Marrakech, so plan at least a three-day trip (two or three nights). The journey itself becomes part of the experience.

Many Merzouga desert camps offer special New Year’s Eve programmes with dinner, local music, drumming, and upgraded menus. Prices increase for this period and camps sell out months in advance. Winter nights are cold, so travellers often choose mid-range or luxury camps.

You do not need to stay only in a desert camp. Merzouga also has desert hotels located directly at the edge of the sand dunes, providing comfort with dune views and easy access for sunrise walks. Check each camp or hotel’s New Year’s programme and availability early.

    4. Nature and mountain villages

For travellers who prefer a quiet New Year’s Eve Morocco experience, mountain villages are a good alternative. The most popular is Imlil, located one and a half hours from Marrakech. It is a small Berber village at the base of Mount Toubkal. Guesthouses offer simple dinners and calm surroundings. Alcohol consumption is limited or unavailable in many local guesthouses, so be respectful of local customs and modest with behaviour.

Travellers often use this period for hiking, short nature walks, or simply resting in a mountain setting. It is a peaceful way to start the new year without formal programmes.

    5. Coastal villages and other cities: Casablanca, Agadir, Taghazout

Casablanca also offers options for New Year’s Eve dinners, mostly for locals. One place to check is Dar Dada, which occasionally announces a New Year’s dinner or small event. Many international hotels in Casablanca also organise set menus with live music.

Agadir is a more tourist-oriented city, so hotels frequently organise their own New Year’s Eve dinners. These can range from simple buffets to music evenings, depending on the hotel. For travellers who want to avoid large crowds, Taghazout is a good alternative. This fisherman village, 30 minutes from Agadir, has become more popular in recent years but still keeps a relaxed vibe. You can find beachside restaurants offering simple dinners, cocktails, and a quiet setting to start the new year.

    Summary

New Year’s Eve Morocco can be celebrated in many ways: gala dinners in Marrakech, relaxed coastal evenings in Essaouira, multi-day Sahara trips from Merzouga, mountain villages like Imlil, or quieter coastal towns like Taghazout. Prices in cities are high during this period, but travellers can also choose normal restaurants without special programmes.

The key to planning New Years Eve Morocco is booking early, knowing the type of celebration you want, and understanding local customs regarding alcohol and public celebrations. Morocco offers several practical options for different travel styles, from lively dinners to quiet nights in nature. Also, be aware Morocco is a Muslim country, do not consume alcohol in public places or openly in the hotels if they don’t sell alcohol (or ask first), be respectful.
