Rabat – Suriname has renewed its strong support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and its sovereignty over all its national territory, including its provinces in the Western Sahara.
The country also reiterated its full backing of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only credible, serious, and realistic solution to the regional dispute.
This position was confirmed in a joint statement signed today in Rabat by Suriname’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Melvin Bouva and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita. The statement followed talks held during Bouva’s working visit to Morocco.
According to the joint statement, the Surinamese minister welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025. He commended the resolution for endorsing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, within Moroccan sovereignty, as the “sole serious and sustainable basis for reaching a political solution to the dispute.”
The statement also welcomed the growing international support for the Autonomy Plan and the diplomatic momentum led by King Mohammed VI in favor of this initiative.
The two ministers encouraged the signing of a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation between twin cities, specifically between the Moroccan city of Dakhla and the Commewijne District in Suriname.
The joint statement recalled that Suriname opened its embassy in Rabat and a consulate general in Dakhla in May 2022.
Morocco and Suriname also reaffirmed their strong commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation in a way that serves the interests of both governments and peoples. The ministers expressed satisfaction with the close ties of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation between the two countries.

The diplomats celebrated the current level of bilateral relations and the results achieved under the cooperation roadmaps for the periods 2017-2021 and 2021-2024. They also discussed future cooperation prospects in line with the ambitions of both friendly nations.
During the visit, Bourita and Bouva signed a new cooperation roadmap covering the period 2026-2028. They also signed two agreements, one on cooperation between diplomatic academies and another in the field of renewable energy.
The two sides discussed the strong economic potential of both countries and reaffirmed their commitment to developing a mutually beneficial partnership.
They agreed to work toward increasing trade exchanges, improving the investment climate, and encouraging business communities to make better use of opportunities in both markets, especially given ongoing infrastructure development.
The statement also noted Morocco’s appreciation for the vision and strategic leadership of Suriname’s President, Jennifer Simons, the country’s first woman president. Morocco hailed her efforts, particularly in promoting access to climate finance for countries with large forest cover and low deforestation rates, as well as her work to advance socio-economic development in Suriname and the wider Caribbean region.
Suriname also commended King Mohammed VI’s initiatives in favor of Atlantic African countries and the Sahel region, and expressed deep gratitude for his vision of South-South cooperation.
Bouva said his country was “deeply grateful to His Majesty King Mohammed VI for his vision of South-South cooperation based on mutual respect, efficiency, solidarity, and pragmatism.” The Foreign Minister stressed the importance of this royal vision in supporting sustainable development in the Caribbean through concrete socio-economic projects.
