Mohammedia – Morocco is bracing for several days of unsettled and potentially disruptive weather as heavy rain, snowfall and sharply colder temperatures are forecast to hit large parts of the country between Wednesday and Saturday, according to the Direction générale de la météorologie (DGM).

In an orange-level weather alert issued on this evening, the DGM warned that intense rainfall, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms, will affect multiple central and northern provinces.

From Wednesday afternoon through Thursday midday, rainfall totals of 30 to 50 millimetres are expected in Azilal,Beni Mellal, Al Haouz, Khenifra and Kelaa Sraghna—areas already sensitive to flooding and runoff.

A broader swath of the country will also see significant rainfall, with accumulations ranging between 20 and 30 millimetres.

Coastal and inland provinces including Casablanca, Rabat, Mohammedia, Kenitra, Settat, El Jadida, Safi and Essaouira are among those concerned, alongside eastern and southern regions such as Nador, Midelt, Taroudant and Tiznit.

Authorities are urging vigilance, particularly in urban zones where drainage systems may be strained.

Beyond rain, snowfall is expected to impact mountainous areas, potentially disrupting transport and daily life. Snow accumulations of 20 to 40 centimetres are forecast above 1,500 metres in provinces including Midelt, Ifrane, Azilal, Al Haouz and Ouarzazate from Wednesday afternoon until Thursday evening.

Lighter snowfall — between 7 and 20 centimetres — is also anticipated in Al Hoceima, Taza, Tinghir and neighbouring areas.

Compounding the situation, a cold wave is set to grip several inland and high-altitude provinces from Thursday through Saturday, with temperatures dropping as low as minus seven degrees Celsius in some locations.

The DGM advises residents to take precautions, particularly in mountainous and rural regions, as Morocco enters a period of harsh winter conditions.
