VAR challenge: CBF explains new test in Brazilian football 🇧🇷

The “VAR challenge” is being tested in Brazil and may soon be implemented in major competitions.

The president of the Arbitration Commission of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), Rodrigo Cintra, explained the new initiative.

Initially, the challenge will be tested in the Copa Paulista and the Women’s Copa do Brasil. Each coach will be entitled to TWO challenges.

“We have a set of 10 matches and by November we will take it back to FIFA so that it can approve it for all competitions,” revealed the president of the Commission in statements released by Rádio Itatiaia.

“If this happens, the convergence between the traditional VAR and the challenge, which is that little card given to the coaches, two for each, tends to become a constant in world football,” concluded Rodrigo Cintra.

Coaches will be able to request the “VAR challenge” in situations where VAR usually intervenes, such as penalties, goals, and direct expulsions.

The president of the Arbitration Commission, Rodrigo Cintra, explained this testing period in Brazilian football.

“This is a FIFA pilot project. FIFA tested (the challenge) in the U-17 and U-20 World Cups. And for six months we have been discussing with FIFA the points for implementing a pilot project like this,” he said.

“We obtained approval with instruction even from FIFA instructors, and then it was passed on to our CBF instructors,” completed Rodrigo Cintra in statements released by Rádio Itatiaia.

The “VAR challenge” debuted in the Comercial 1 x 1 XV de Piracicaba match and was requested three times for penalty reviews.
