UK Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, Most Credible

The United Kingdom has reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the “most credible, viable and pragmatic basis for peace in the Sahara,” following high-level talks held in London between British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

In statements issued after the meeting, Cooper reaffirmed the UK’s position on the Sahara issue, renewing backing for Morocco’s proposal as a constructive framework for resolving the long-standing dispute. The position echoes commitments previously outlined in June last year during the Morocco-UK Strategic Dialogue in Rabat.

That joint communiqué had also underlined the urgency for all parties to engage positively and constructively with the United Nations-led political process, which remains the central framework for negotiations on the issue.

London further indicated that it would continue to support efforts toward a political settlement at bilateral, regional, and international levels, reinforcing its diplomatic engagement in favor of a negotiated solution.

Beyond the Sahara issue, Cooper highlighted the historical depth and strategic significance of UK-Morocco relations. He described the bilateral partnership as “a source of great value for both peoples,” particularly in light of expanding cooperation opportunities linked to the 2030 FIFA World Cup that Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

Cooper’s meeting with Bourita reflects a broader deepening of ties between Rabat and London, with both sides emphasizing shared strategic interests and long-term cooperation across political, economic, and global development priorities.
