Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Equipment and Water has urged drivers to be extra careful on the roads after the national weather office issued an alert for severe storms and heavy snowfall in several provinces.

The ministry said the warning from the General Directorate of Meteorology forecasts strong thunderstorms and dense snow that could cause traffic disruptions on major roads in affected areas. The ministry said some routes may become difficult or unsafe due to flooding, poor visibility, and slippery conditions.

Heavy thunderstorms are expected with rainfall totals ranging from 60 to 100 millimeters in provinces including Tetouan, Larache, Chefchaouen, Ouezzane, Taounate, Al Hoceima, Taza, Kenitra, Tangier-Assilah, Fahs-Anjra, Moulay Yacoub, Khénifra, Meknes, Khemisset, Ifrane, Sefrou, Sidi Kacem, and Sidi Slimane.

Rainfall totals of 50 to 65 millimeters are expected in areas including Azilal, Beni Mellal, El Hajeb, Fez, M’diq-Fnideq, and Driouch, while 20 to 40 mm is forecast in Rabat, Salé, Skhirat-Témara, Mohammedia, Casablanca, Settat, and Al Haouz.

The alert also forecasts heavy snowfall in altitudes above 1,200 meters, with accumulations of 20 to 50 centimeters in Ifrane, Midelt, Boulemane, Beni Mellal, Azilal, Khénifra, Tinghir, Ouarzazate, and Al Haouz. Lighter snowfall of 5 to 15 cm is expected in provinces including Chefchaouen, Al Hoceima, Taourirt, and Chichaoua.

The ministry said the severe weather is expected from Thursday night through Monday, coinciding with the start of the school vacation, and it urged travelers to plan ahead.

It also advised drivers to check their vehicles before leaving, including tire pressure, brakes, lights, wipers, windshield washer fluid, and fuel.

Officials also warned against crossing flooded areas or driving through rising streams, advised motorists to reduce speed, avoid sudden passing, and keep a safe distance between vehicles.

The ministry encouraged people to avoid traveling at night and to follow road signs and instructions from local authorities.
