A tragic day in Safi as heavy rainfall hit the city since Sunday morning.

According to reports, seven deaths were recorded as a result of sweeping floods and water infiltrating several homes and shops.

The heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding, with water levels rising suddenly in streets and narrow alleys.

Several neighborhoods and homes were submerged.

Local authorities said the rainfall caused exceptional flood flows within one hour.

At least 20 people were rescued and are currently receiving medical care at Mohammed V Hospital in Safi.

The heavy rainfall also caused material damage.

Data from a preliminary assessment shows that the heavy rainfall caused

flooding of 70 homes and commercial shops in the old city of Safi.

Floodwaters swept away around 10 vehicles.

The floods also caused damage to roads in addition to traffic disruption across several axes within the city.

Local authorities said public services have mobilized all logistical means and human resources to intervene immediately in order to address this exceptional situation and provide support and assistance to citizens.

Efforts are still ongoing to search for and locate any potential missing persons, as well as to restore road connectivity and service networks across the province, local authorities said.
