Marrakech – Tangier is reportedly preparing to install one of Morocco’s largest national flags on its waterfront promenade, creating a monumental symbol visible from the Spanish coastline across the Strait of Gibraltar.

According to converging reports from local media, the municipality has allocated MAD 1.3 million ($130,000) for the ambitious project. The installation will feature a flag mounted on a 30-meter steel pole, equivalent to a nine-story building.

Moroccan news website Le Desk specifies dimensions of 6 by 4 meters, while other sources report estimates ranging between 30 to 50 square meters, with some suggesting up to 100 square meters.

The strategic location on Tangier’s northern waterfront positions the flag for visibility from Spain’s Tarifa coast, which lies just 14 kilometers away at the strait’s narrowest point. Clear weather conditions between April and September will reportedly enhance visibility across the Mediterranean waters.

Engineering specifications address the challenging maritime environment of the strait. The structure includes a reinforced concrete foundation designed to withstand wind speeds exceeding 60 kilometers per hour. The steel pole incorporates anti-corrosion treatments and humidity-resistant materials to combat sea spray and oxidation.

The project encompasses specialized lighting systems enabling nighttime visibility across Tangier Bay. Technical documentation covers civil engineering works and site preparation, ensuring structural integrity in the strait’s demanding weather conditions.

Municipal sources indicate the flag will serve as both a commemorative monument and tourist attraction. The installation aims to create a new urban landmark celebrating Morocco’s presence at one of the world’s most significant maritime passages.

The initiative forms part of broader waterfront renovation plans preparing for upcoming continental and international events. Final approval of technical specifications will determine the construction timeline for the allegedly unprecedented project.

Project oversight involves Tangier Municipality President Mounir Lyamouri. The installation represents Morocco’s largest flag display, positioned strategically where Africa meets Europe across the historic strait.
