Rabat – Police confirmed that at least 10 people were killed in a shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday.

Bondi Beach is one of the country’s most famous destinations.

Reports said a gunman opened fire during a Jewish Hanukkah celebration. Two suspects are in custody, while one of at least two gunmen was among those killed.

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack, describing it as “shocking and distressing.”

He said emergency responders are working to save lives.

“The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing. Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives,” he wrote in a statement. He added that he spoke to authorities to keep the public updated once more information is confirmed.

“I urge people in the vicinity to follow information from the NSW police,” he added.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog commented on the shooting, decribng it as an attack by “vile terrorists.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar attributed the attack to what he called an “anti-Semitic rampage in the streets of Australia over the past two years, with anti-Semitic and inciting calls of ‘Globalise the Intifada’ that were realized today.”

Police have urged the public to avoid the area and take shelter, warning that the operation was ongoing in response to the shooting.

The leader of Australia’s Liberal Party, Sussan Ley, said Australians are in deep mourning, describing the incident as hateful violence that struck an iconic Australian community.
