Bajaur District Police Officer Waqas Rafique confirmed the incident to Dawn in Khar tehsil’s Kausar Cricket Ground and said the blast was carried out through an improvised explosive device.
“It appears to be a targeted attack,” he added.
Authorities confirmed that one man died, while several others — including children — sustained injuries. The wounded were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“In a state of panic, many fled the field as the blast shook the ground,” The Express Tribune quoted a police spokesperson. “The explosion occurred while local players were actively engaged in the game.”
In a separate incident, the attackers reportedly attempted to target a police station, but the assault missed its mark. Initial investigations have yet to identify the group responsible for the attack, as no organisation has claimed responsibility at this time.
