Rabat – British company Sound Energy PLC has announced that the Tendrara gas project in Morocco’s Oriental region has reached a significant phase.

The company said today that the first gas has entered the field’s gas gathering system. This marks the start of initial commissioning activities for the TE-5 Horst development, or the production concession

This is in preparation for long-term gas production into the micro-LNG plant.

Sound Energy, which has a 20% stake in the Tendrara production concession, announced that the final requirement component of the gas gathering system was developed on November 28.

The concession is operated by Mana Energy Ltd, which has a 55% stake.

“After installation, gas was safely and successfully flowed from the TE-6 production well, to commence the commissioning of the GGS,” the statement said, referring to the gas gathering system.

The statement emphasized that the micro-LNG plant designed by Italfluid Geoenergy will operate and maintain the facility. It will ensure the LNG delivery to Morocco’s energy distributor Afriquia Gaz under a 10-year gas sales agreement.

The agreement guarantees the purchase of 100 million cubic meters per year at a price indexed to European and US benchmarks.

Sound Energy concluded its statement thanking all its partners, including the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) and the contractor, for supporting the project.

Earlier this year, Sound Energy reaffirmed its growing interest in Morocco’s industry.

It also suggested that potential undiscovered gas in eastern Morocco could exceed 20 trillion cubic feet.

Sound Energy CEO Majid Shafiq described the phase as a milestone, saying it brings gas to Moroccan industrial consumers.

“I look forward to full commissioning of the micro-LNG facility and delivery of sales gas in the coming months,” he said, announcing the entering of an “exciting period” at the company.

Morocco has been partnering with international exporters to diversify its suppliers and also strengthen its energy sovereignty.

Earlier this month, Morocco’s Ministry of Energy launched major international tenders to develop the country’s first liquefied natural gas infrastructure phase.
