Morocco’s AFCON Winning Start Overshadowed by Romain Saïss Injury Concern

Morocco made the perfect start to their home AFCON with a 2–0 win over Comoros, but the celebrations were quickly tempered by concern over Romain Saïss. The Atlas Lions’ captain was forced off in the first half after an awkward landing during a duel, leaving the pitch visibly distressed.

The central defender’s early exit cast a shadow over an otherwise solid opening night for the hosts, who eventually pulled clear in the second half to take control of Group A.

Speaking after the match, head coach Walid Regragui admitted there was reason for concern.  “We don’t have the exact diagnosis yet. He felt something in his knee. It won’t recover quickly,” Regragui said. “We hope to get him back as the tournament goes on. It’s a blow for the team. We have to manage absences.”

Saïss’ situation adds to Morocco’s defensive worries, increasing pressure on the back line early in the competition.

Despite the injury setback, Morocco delivered where it mattered on the scoreboard. After a difficult first half, 2 goals in the second period secured all three points and put the hosts in a strong early position.
