Agadir –  The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen) plans to release a nationwide geographic information system (GIS) for renewable energy in 2026. The digital platform will cover the entire country, centralizing and optimizing geospatial data on solar and wind projects.

The project aligns with Morocco’s national goal to raise the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix to 52% by 2030. Combining data on energy potential, site conditions, environmental factors, and infrastructure, the system will help identify the most suitable locations for new solar and wind facilities.

Morocco is expected to exceed renewable capacity of 52% electricity mix, reaching 56% by 2027, ahead of the 2030 target. Wind power alone has grown rapidly in recent months, reaching roughly 2,390 megawatts (MW) by the end of 2024 and forming nearly one‑fifth of the country’s installed capacity.

GIS as tool for renewable planning

Masen emphasizes that the GIS program will serve as a strategic decision‑making tool, allowing the collection, storage, analysis, and visualization of georeferenced data. As it will also provide a complete view of the factors influencing renewable energy projects.

The platform will assist every stage of the project development from start to finish, identifying  high‑potential sites for solar and wind energy production, analyzing the environmental constraints that affect project feasibility, evaluating  infrastructure needs and engaging stakeholders.

    Masen’s role in energy development

Masen agency played a major role in planning and implementing large‑scale renewable energy projects in Morocco. These include the Noor Ouarzazate solar complex, one of the largest solar facilities in the world, recently returned to full operation after maintenance.

Masen has also launched programs to expand solar power generation, such as the Noor Atlas Photovoltaic Solar Energy program, with investments exceeding 2 billion dirhams to boost capacity and meet renewable energy goals.

With the GIS program, Masen seeks to strengthen its role in Morocco’s energy transition and advance its digital transformation, ensuring that renewable energy development is closely aligned with the country’s territorial realities.
