Morocco Says West Bank Stability is Key to Gaza Peace Efforts

Rabat – Morocco has emphasized that stability in the West Bank is essential for the success of any initiative related to the Gaza Strip, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said on Thursday.

Speaking on Thursday during a joint press conference in Rabat with Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka, Bourita stressed that “Morocco considers that the West Bank and its stability are essential for the success of any effort concerning Gaza.” He added that while regional tensions in the Gulf remain important, they should not overshadow the urgent developments in the Palestinian territories over recent weeks.

The Moroccan minister highlighted recent threats to stability in the West Bank. Israeli settlers have continued to encroach on the area using illegal and controversial laws, confiscating Palestinian land and terrorizing the residents who live there.

Bourita also expressed concern over the situation in Jerusalem, particularly regarding Israeli “attacks and restrictions on Al-Aqsa Mosque, especially during Ramadan.” He noted that these developments are of “great concern to Morocco”, given King Mohammed VI’s role as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee.

Morocco expressed hope that the region could regain calm, allowing for the implementation of the second phase of the US plan for Gaza, while ensuring stability in the West Bank. Bourita reiterated that, in line with King Mohammed VI’s guidance, the Palestinian issue should not be approached opportunistically or episodically, emphasizing that a lasting solution lies in the two-state framework: a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, coexisting peacefully with Israel.

He stressed the importance of maintaining order in Palestinian territories, noting that weakening the Palestinian Authority or repeated Israeli provocations and decisions undermining West Bank stability “could also jeopardize the success of any plan related to Gaza.”

The minister concluded by referencing regional tensions in the Gulf, particularly Iranian aggressions, reaffirming Morocco’s solidarity with Gulf states and opposition to these attacks, as consistently expressed by King Mohammed VI, reflecting the country’s strong ties with Gulf countries.

This statement affirms Morocco’s continued diplomatic commitment to Palestinian stability and its broader role as a mediator in regional peace efforts.
