Morocco Launches 2026-2027 Inland Fishing Season with Focus

Rabat– The National Water and Forestry Agency (ANEF) has officially announced the opening of Morocco’s 2026-2027 inland fishing season, set to begin on Sunday, March 8. In a statement, the agency emphasized its ongoing commitment to protecting aquatic ecosystems while promoting a structured and responsible inland fisheries sector that generates economic opportunities.

According to ANEF, inland fishing plays a strategic role for rural and mountainous areas, supporting local economies through multiple channels: sport and recreational fishing, which boosts tourism and highlights regional attractions; commercial fishing, providing income for local communities; and inland aquaculture, a cornerstone of sustainable fish production and sectoral food security.

The new season opens amid ongoing challenges from water scarcity and climate change, with ANEF stressing that conservation of fish biodiversity—particularly high-value species such as brown trout—remains a top priority.

Reflecting on the previous season, the agency highlighted significant restocking efforts. It released 26.7 million fingerlings into lakes, rivers, and other waterways across the country, strengthening fish populations and supporting the long-term sustainability of inland fisheries.

ANEF also oversees the sector through strict enforcement of annual regulations covering quotas, minimum sizes, and open periods, as well as scientific monitoring of aquatic environments. Key initiatives include fingerling production at the Azrou National Hydrobiology and Fish Farming Center, surveillance of fishing areas, anti-poaching measures, and collaboration with associations and federations to ensure participatory management.

The National Council for Inland Fishing and Aquaculture, which met on February 5, reinforced strategic priorities for the season and strengthened coordination among all stakeholders. The agency continues to encourage responsible fishing practices that respect ecosystems and ensure sustainable use of Morocco’s freshwater resources.
