Rabat – Morocco’s ports experienced a significant boost in activity in 2025, with total traffic reaching 262.6 million tons, up from 241.2 million tons in 2024, an increase of 8.9%, according to the Ministry of Equipment and Water.
Domestic traffic rose to 130 million tons, up 3.5% from the previous year, while transshipment volumes jumped to 132.6 million tons, a 14.7% increase.
Transshipment now represents the largest share of port activity at 50.5%, followed by imports at 29.6%, exports at 15.7%, cabotage at 3.6%, and bunkering at 0.6%.
Tanger Med confirmed its status as a key Mediterranean logistics hub, handling 128.7 million tonnes of transshipped containers, a 14.4% increase, equivalent to 10.3 million TEUs, up 7.9% from 2024.
Imports totaled 77.6 million tons, up 2.8% from 2024. Hydrocarbons reached 13.4 million tons (+3.9%), coal 10.4 million tons (+7.3%), containers 13.5 million tons (+14.6%), road transport 6.9 million tons (+7%), cereals 10.1 million tons (-4.5%), and sulfur 6.7 million tons (-18.2%).
Exports also grew, reaching 41.3 million tons, a 1.4% rise. Raw phosphate totaled 6.8 million tons (+4%), containers 6.3 million tons (+10.4%), road transport 6.5 million tons (+5.2%), sulfuric acid 1.5 million tons (-24.2%), phosphoric acid 2.6 million tons (-17.1%), and fertilizers 12 million tons (-0.9%).
Cabotage between Moroccan ports rose sharply by 24.3%, reaching 9.3 million tons, driven mainly by hydrocarbons (+41%) and phosphoric acid (+318.5%). Bunkering, concentrated at Tanger Med, fell 4.2% to 1.7 million tons.
Traffic of new vehicles dropped 5.8% to 662,990 units, with around 70% destined for export. Passenger traffic reached 5,585,310, a 5.4% increase over 2024. Ports in the Strait of Gibraltar, Tanger Med, and Tanger Ville handled over 84% of all passengers. Cruise activity also surged, welcoming 383,231 travelers, up 41.7% from the previous year.
Meanwhile, landings of coastal and artisanal fishing products fell 15.2% to 1.13 million tons. Commercial vessel calls declined slightly by 2.6% to 28,664.
The ports of Tanger Med, Jorf Lasfar, and Casablanca together processed 232 million tons, representing nearly 88% of Morocco’s total port traffic.
The Ministry’s report reflects Morocco’s growing role as a regional maritime hub and points to Tanger Med’s strategic position as a gateway connecting Africa, Europe, and the Mediterranean
