Rabat – Moroccan police have denied online claims that a Senegalese citizen was killed in Morocco following the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Morocco and Senegal, which caused widespread social tension throughout the country.

The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said it reviewed digital content shared by Senegalese websites and social media accounts. These posts claimed that a Senegalese man was stabbed to death with a knife in Morocco after the chaotic AFCON final.

According to Moroccan authorities, investigations found no record of any murder or fatal assault involving using a knife or any other weapon against a Senegalese national.

The DGSN said the only incident recorded was the discovery of the body of an unidentified Sub-Saharan African man in the city of Sale. Police said the body smelled of alcohol and showed no clear signs of violence or resistance, except for minor bite marks. These marks were linked to the presence of stray dogs in the area where the body was found.

Police confirmed that a judicial investigation has been opened under the supervision of the public prosecutor to identify the deceased and determine the circumstances of his death. Fingerprints were taken but did not match any records in the national police database.

Moroccan authorities said they are currently coordinating with Interpol and Senegalese security services to compare fingerprints and help identify the individual.

As part of the investigation, police also looked into the identity documents shared by Senegalese accounts, which claimed to belong to the alleged victim. Authorities said the documents belong to a Senegalese citizen who holds a Moroccan residence card. However, field checks showed that the person does not live at the address provided, prompting further investigations supported by technical expertise.

The DGSN concluded by reaffirming that no murder or fatal stabbing has been recorded, and that claims linking a Senegalese citizen’s death to violence after the AFCON final are unfounded. The body found in Sale has been transferred to the hospital for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
