A mistake from West Ham goalkeeper Kinga Szemik handed London City Lionesses a 1-0 win at Bromley as the Irons slumped to a sixth successive Women’s Super League defeat.

With 20 minutes left of what had been a close match, Szemik delayed on the ball in the six-yard box as she looked to play out from the back, allowing the alert Kosovare Asllani to dart in and take possession before tapping into an empty net.

The Lionesses settled quickly, with Freya Godfrey sending a rising shot over the crossbar after cutting in from the right.

The visitors then almost took the lead in the 21st minute when Viviane Asseyi picked the ball up in midfield and strode forwards to fire a 20-yard effort against the outside of a post.

Kosovare Asllani scored the only goal of the afternoon at Bromley.

After Nikita Parris saw her long-range effort fly wide at the other end, West Ham forced keeper Elene Lete to make a smart stop from Amber Tysiak’s header.

There remained little between the sides in the early stages of the second half before both managers made some substations looking to increase the tempo again as the hour approached.

West Ham then had their best spell, with Lionesses defenders Elena Linari and Saki Kumagai both having to hack the ball away in front of their own goal.

All of that hard work, though, was then undone when the home side were gifted a goal in the 68th minute.

Szemik took far too much time when trying to play out from the back and was not aware as Asllani darted in to steal the ball and roll it into an empty net.
