Rabat – Spain’s top-tier football league, La Liga, says it will stage its first Retro Matchday from April 10 to 13, a new initiative in European football.

All 38 clubs from LALIGA EA SPORTS and LALIGA HYPERMOTION will wear kits inspired by historic designs from their past.

Referees will also take part, using special retro uniforms approved by the RFEF’s Referees Technical Committee.

The project is part of La Liga’s  “A Living Legacy” campaign, which aims to connect club history with today’s competition.

By reintroducing classic designs, the league wants to bridge generations of fans and showcase the cultural identity of Spanish football.

La Liga is the first of Europe’s top five leagues to organize a coordinated retro matchday of this scale.

The retro kits will be unveiled on March 19 at Madrid Fashion Week, linking football with fashion on an international stage.

Jaime Blanco, Director of La Liga’s Club Office, said the initiative is a chance to honor club history and symbols that have shaped supporters.

He added that presenting the collection during Spain’s leading fashion event helps project football’s identity beyond the pitch.

Retro matchday will go beyond the kits themselves, with La Liga said to be planning a full 360-degree experience involving clubs, former players, sponsors, and partners.

The LEGENDS and  The Home of Football initiatives will play a central role in showcasing the history behind the initiative. Broadcasts will feature retro‑style graphics, and digital activations will extend the theme before and after the matches.

The campaign also tied to the “42 legacies, 42 ways of winning” scheme, which shows how passion for clubs is passed down through generations.

In championing and staging retro Matchday, La Liga hoped to reinforce its commitment to preserving club identity while creating a new experience for fans.
