Rabat – King Mohammed VI has sent a message of condolences and sympathy to Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia following the deadly high-speed train crash in southern Spain.
King Mohammed VI said he received the news of the accident with deep sadness and shock. He expressed his sincere solidarity with the Spanish royal family and the Spanish people. Speaking on behalf of himself and the Moroccan people, the King offered his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured.
The message came after two high-speed trains collided near the town of Adamuz, close to the city of Cordoba, on Sunday evening. At least 42 people were killed, and more than 120 others were injured in what authorities have described as Spain’s worst train disaster in more than a decade. Many of the injured are still being treated in hospitals, including several in intensive care.
According to Spanish officials, a Madrid-bound train derailed and crossed onto the opposite track, where it struck an oncoming train. Around 400 passengers and staff were on board the two trains. Emergency services worked through the night using heavy machinery to recover victims trapped inside damaged carriages.
Spain’s interior minister has ruled out sabotage, saying it was never considered. Investigators are focusing on a possible broken rail on the high-speed line. Transport Minister Óscar Puente said the investigation could take at least a month and warned against speculation, noting that the death toll is not yet final.
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia visited the crash site on Tuesday and later went to a hospital in Córdoba to meet injured passengers. Spain has declared three days of national mourning for the victims. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also canceled his planned trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, saying the government is committed to fully uncovering the causes of the tragedy.
High-speed rail services between Madrid and several southern cities, including Malaga, Cordoba, Sevilla, and Huelva, have been suspended as investigations and recovery efforts continue.
