Agadir – The High Commission for Planning (HCP) presented today key findings of the 2025 National Family Survey, highlighting the evolving dynamics of family life in Morocco.

This latest study is the only second of its kind since a 1995 survey. It offers data‑driven analysis of how Moroccan families are changing amid broader social and demographic transitions.

Chakib Benmoussa, the HCP chief, unveiled the research’s conclusions at a national press conference in Rabat, showing the transformation of the traditional family model.

Describing family as the very foundation of the social structure and the primary agent of socialization, the HCP report noted a radical transformation of the traditional family model in Morocco.

Still, it noted, the Moroccan family continues to serve simultaneously as the space for demographic reproduction and the framework for integrating individuals into collective life.

Of the many factors contributing to the transformation of the family model, the report cited health shock caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and changes linked to the country’s modernization process (particularly urbanization), the expansion of education, evolving lifestyles, and residential mobility.

HCP data reports that the average household size declined from 4.6 persons in 2014 to 3.9 in 2024, falling below the threshold of four persons per household. It added that during the same period the feminization of household headship increased from 16.2% to 19.2%.

The report showed a rise in demographic aging, with the proportion of elderly people reaching 13.8% in 2024, compared to 9.4% ten years earlier.

The data report that households consist of just parents and their children, unlike extended families, which may include grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, or other relatives rose by 73% compared to 60.8% in 1995.

Between 1995 and 2025, the growth of this family model was stronger in urban areas, where the average annual growth rate reached 3.6%, compared to 2.4% in rural areas. In addition, childless couples rose from 3.4% to 9.4%, a trend observed in both urban and rural areas, HCP noted.

Single-parenthood  grew, with one only parent supporting the family, from 7.3% to 8.8%. It reached 9.9% in urban areas and 6.5% in rural areas.
