Rabat – FIFA President Gianni Infantino responds to the widely spread controversy over the sky rock prices of the 2026 World Cup held in the USA.
Infantino explained during a Q&A session with Semafor that the nature of FIFA’s work relies primarily on World Cup revenues. “The main, and so far only, source of revenue for FIFA is the World Cup,” he said. “We generate revenue in one month; for the other 47 months, until the next World Cup, we spend that money.”
Critics have vocally pushed back against the barrier to entry for ordinary fans, as FIFA received 150 million requests for only 7 million seats.
The organization is signaling that the tournament is oversubscribed by 30 times more than the 2022 Qatar World cup, arguing that the price is simply a consequence of this unprecedented global interest.
“This overwhelming response from passionate fans is a true representation of how our game is loved globally,” Infantino said. “We are going to make history in North America when we bring the world together like never before in a celebration of unity and the best of football.”
