Europe’s Aviation Sector Faces Imminent Fuel Crunch as Supply Disruptions Deepen

Tetouan – Europe’s aviation industry is confronting the prospect of severe disruption within weeks, as a growing shortage of jet fuel threatens to curtail flights and drive ticket prices sharply higher ahead of the peak summer season.

According to Aljazeera, current jet fuel reserves across Europe are only sufficient to cover a limited number of weeks before the continent risks entering a phase of acute shortage.

The warning comes amid escalating pressure on global energy markets linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting key supply routes.

The International Air Transport Association has also raised concerns, cautioning that airlines may begin a gradual suspension of flights by the end of next month if supply conditions fail to improve.

Such a scenario would directly threaten the summer travel season, traditionally the most critical period for airline revenues.

At the heart of the crisis is Europe’s structural dependence on imported jet fuel, particularly from Gulf producers.

Roughly three-quarters of the continent’s supply is sourced from the region, leaving European carriers highly exposed to any disruption.

Global demand for jet fuel reached approximately 7.8 million barrels per day last year, with Gulf countries contributing a significant share to international markets.

Even in the event of a reopening of key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, recovery is expected to be gradual.

Jet fuel production in the Gulf is closely tied to broader petrochemical operations, complicating efforts to quickly restore output levels.

The situation is further exacerbated by infrastructure damage across the region.

Reports indicate that around 80 energy facilities have been affected, suggesting that a full recovery in production capacity could take several months.

Airlines have already begun to respond. Cost-containment measures are being introduced, including flight reductions and route adjustments, as operators attempt to manage rising expenses.

Fuel alone accounts for roughly 27 percent of total operating costs, making it the most sensitive variable in the sector’s financial structure.

For passengers, the consequences are likely to be immediate. Reduced flight availability combined with higher operating costs is expected to push ticket prices upward, potentially to record levels.

Taken together, these developments point to a period of significant instability for global aviation.

With energy constraints converging with peak seasonal demand, the months ahead could temporarily reshape air travel patterns and test the resilience of an industry still recovering from previous shocks.
