Rabat – The Port of Almeria has launched its preparatory campaign for Morocco’s 2026 Marhaba operation, an annual initiative facilitating the transit of Moroccan diaspora during the summer season.

Europa Press said the port will dedicate a 7,525-square-meter shade system during the 2026 Operation Crossing the Strait.

The system aims to reduce waiting times for travelers taking their vehicles to Morocco.

The news outlet also said the port allocated €141,830 for the project.

The plan includes two large vehicle areas of 3,400 and 2,400 square meters in the pre-boarding zone, in addition to a 50 square meter structure at checkpoints.

The Red Cross, Guardia Civil’s tents, and the Maritime Station will also be part of the mobilization.

Marhaba Operation is an annual initiative that facilitates the transit and return of the Moroccan diaspora for the summer holiday.

According to the Mohamed V Foundation for Solidarity, the humanitarian assistance mechanism aims to provide the Moroccan diaspora influx with all necessary conditions upon their return to Morocco for  summer vacations.

Morocco launched the operation in 2001, and dedicated reception areas at main international maritime points, including Italy, France, and Spain, as well as several arrival points in Morocco.

The foundation deploys social workers and volunteer medical staff to assist the Moroccan diaspora.

Last year in September, the foundation said that over 4 million Moroccans living abroad returned home between June 10 and September 15  as part of the Marhaba campaign 2025.

Peak periods witnessed more than 86,000 crossings per day.

The foundation, in partnership with institutional partners, deployed a network of 26 reception sites, 20 in Morocco and 6 abroad, supported by 1,000 personnel, including social workers, doctors, and nurses.

Medical and social services provided direct assistance to more than 88,000 members of the Moroccan diaspora, including over 22,000 cases of administrative and customs support, more than 7,500 medical interventions, and over 1,575 instances of direct transport assistance.
