Rabat– Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance against Zimbabwe and exuded confidence as they prepare to face South Africa in one of the most anticipated matches of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2025 Group B stage on Friday.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, coach Hassan emphasized Egypt’s ambition while acknowledging the quality of their South African opponents. “We respect all teams, and South Africa are among the strong sides, but we play to achieve positive results and collect the three points. Every match is important,” he said.
Hassan highlighted a match-by-match strategy, noting that the technical staff carefully analyze opponents while trusting the readiness of the entire squad. He confirmed that goalkeeping poses no concerns, with all options prepared and reliable.
The coach also expressed gratitude to Egyptian and Moroccan fans for their support during the opening win over Zimbabwe, describing Egypt’s stay in Morocco as “comfortable and welcoming.” He added that strong backing from supporters at home has boosted morale within the squad, while stressing that each game demands a tailored tactical approach.
On South Africa, Hassan said their national team reflects the playing style of their club sides, which Egyptian teams such as Al-Ahly, Zamalek, and Pyramids have faced repeatedly in continental competitions. He recalled Egypt’s victory over South Africa at the 1998 tournament and expressed hope of repeating that success.
Regarding team news, Hassan noted that the fitness of striker Mostafa Mohamed and defender Mohamed Hamdy would be assessed after Thursday’s training session. He also explained the substitution of Emam Ashour against Zimbabwe as a tactical adjustment aimed at introducing a recognized centre-forward.
Hassan praised Egypt’s statistical dominance in the opening match and singled out captain Mohamed Salah for his influence, while describing goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy as one of the continent’s finest.
Egypt currently tops Group B with three points, level with South Africa, while Zimbabwe and Angola remain winless after the first round of matches. The upcoming South Africa vs Egypt clash promises a high-stakes contest as both teams vie to secure their position in the group.
