Dialogue Amid Lingering 2025 AFCON Tensions

Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is expected in Dakar on Tuesday, April 4, for meetings with Senegalese officials. The visit comes shortly after the end of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) , at a time when discussions about the final are still ongoing in the country.

According to Senegalese journalist Lassana Camara, who reported the news, this trip is part of CAF’s effort to stay in contact with key football authorities following recent events.

A final that took an unusual turn

The 2025 AFCON final didn’t end in the usual fashion. Instead of a champion being crowned on the pitch, Senegal’s walk-off left the match and the tournament unfinished in the eyes of many.

Following this situation, CAF applied its rules, articles 82 and 84, which cover match abandonment and breaches of competition rules, and officially awarded the title to Morocco as the rightful winners.

    Senegal’s reaction and position

After the decision, the Senegalese Football Federation expressed reservations about how the final outcome was determined. Without directly escalating the situation, several reactions from officials and within the local football scene showed that the decision was not fully accepted in Dakar.

Discussions have focused on the circumstances of the withdrawal and how the final was managed. For some observers, the fact that the match did not reach its natural sporting conclusion remains a key point in understanding the reaction.

    CAF’s response: dialogue first

During a press conference held on March 29 in Cairo, Motsepe had already addressed the situation. He stated that CAF would try to “repair what can be repaired” by visiting both Senegal and Morocco.

He also insisted that football should not create tension between nations, especially those with strong historical relations. His visit to Dakar can therefore be seen as part of this effort to maintain communication and calm the situation.

    More than just football

This visit shows that football decisions can sometimes have effects beyond the game itself. CAF must apply its rules, but it also has to manage how those decisions are received by its member associations.

By coming to Dakar, Motsepe is choosing direct discussion at a moment when opinions still differ. Whether this will lead to a shared understanding is still unclear, but it highlights the importance of dialogue in African football today.
