Celtics hope to move Anfernee Simons before 2026 trade deadline

Don’t get used to having Anfernee Simons around too much, Boston Celtics fans. The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer recently reported that the Celtics are still trying to move the former Portland Trail Blazers guard to another team. But it does not appear that the front office is in a hurry to do so, based on the framing of Fischer’s report.

Per the Stein Line reporter, an “expectation persists, furthermore, that Boston will continue to invite trade discussion involving Anfernee Simons from now through next season’s trade deadline.” Note the phrasing here — this seems to be coming from external sources likely in talks at some point over the course of the 2025 NBA offseason to such an effect. This tracks with how the Celtics tend to operate, rarely leaking news about their plans themselves.

Fischer’s report had a few other nuggets related to Boston’s offseason to date, including the fact that the Celtics unsurprisingly spoke with a number of teams about moving reserve forward Georges Niang before Boston ultimately dealt him to the Utah Jazz with a pair of seconds for cap savings for two way wing RJ Luis Jr.

Per Fischer, the Jazz plan to hang on to Niang for the short term at least, and the Golden State Warriors remain locked in a “staring contest” with forward Jonathan Kuminga. While not mentioned directly in the piece by Fischer, said deadlock is likely holding up another of the last of Boston’s offseason business, namely the free agency of vet big man Al Horford.

It is all but certain Horford is gone to the Dubs, but until Kuminga’s situation sorts itself out, the thinking is that Horford will have to wait to sign with his new NBA home. Retirement or perhaps taking a darkhorse offer out of impatience with the situation remain as less likely outcomes, but there has been little reporting hinting this might actually take place.
