Rabat – Wydad Athletic Club secured qualification to the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup, and coach Amine Benhachem used the occasion to underline the importance of leadership within his squad.

Speaking after the match, he stressed that the presence of experienced figures is helping the team build unity and confidence at a crucial stage of the competition.

Benhachem explained that the group currently has three recognized leaders, Nordin Amrabat, Amine Aboulfath, and Mehdi Benabid.

He revealed that Aboulfath himself suggested giving the captain’s armband to Morocco’s Hakim Ziyech, noting that Ziyech’s reputation and quality could further strengthen the team. “He is a big player with a name, and he deserves it,” Aboulfath told the coach.

The gesture was followed by another symbolic moment. When Amrabat entered the pitch, Ziyech handed him the armband, a gesture of respect that reinforced the sense of harmony within the squad.

Benhachem described these actions as positive signs that the players are working together and maintaining good spirits.

The match itself was tense, with Wydad needing a strong performance to confirm their place in the last eight.

In their 2-0 win over Azam FC at Stade Mohammed V, the team CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinals.

The Moroccan side managed the game well, with their defensive organization holding firm and midfield leaders guiding younger teammates through difficult phases.

Benhachem stressed that such gestures of leadership go beyond tactics. They reflect a collective spirit that can make the difference in high‑pressure matches.

For Wydad, the presence of seasoned internationals like Ziyech and Amrabat is proving valuable, both on and off the pitch.

As the Confederation Cup moves into its decisive stages, Wydad will rely on this blend of experience and teamwork.
