Belgium Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Sahara

Rabat – Belgium has once again placed its support behind Morocco’s autonomy proposal for the Western Sahara, calling it the most serious and realistic path toward resolving the long-standing regional dispute.

The message came from Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, after today’s talks in Rabat with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

Speaking after the meeting, Prévot described Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the most credible basis for a political solution that is fair, durable, and acceptable to all parties.

The Belgian minister made it clear that his country’s position follows the joint declaration signed in Brussels in October 2025. He also acknowledged the central place the Sahara dispute holds for Morocco, describing it as a matter tied to sovereignty and national unity.

Prévot said Belgium will reflect this stance through concrete diplomatic and economic steps. He stressed that Brussels acts within the framework of international law, and that its approach aims to support a negotiated political outcome.

In practical terms, Belgium plans to increase its engagement on the ground. The Belgian ambassador in Rabat will soon travel to Morocco’s southern provinces to engage with Belgian companies expected to explore opportunities in the region.

Plans for regional economic forums are also under consideration in coordination with local agencies.

On the consular front, Belgium confirmed that its Consulate General in Rabat has jurisdiction over the entire territory of Morocco, including its southern provinces in the Sahara.

Belgian nationals who reside in, or travel to the region, will continue to receive services without any regional distinction.

The visit reflects the steady evolution of ties between Belgium and Morocco.

The two countries maintain regular political consultations and seek to deepen cooperation across strategic sectors, from diplomacy to trade.
