Rabat — Azzedine Ounahi thinks he’s finally found the perfect spot for his football. Since joining Girona FC back in the summer, the Moroccan midfielder’s been saying that La Liga is the competition that really gets him going.

Things were pretty tough for Ounahi and in late August, Ounahi lef Olympique de Marseille. There was a real uncertainty hangover from the club’s season: poor playing time and confusing tactics. He signed a five-year deal with Girona, and for him the move was a total reset, at a league that actually suited his playing style and strengths.

When Ounahi went to Spain for his official presentation, he made it pretty clear why he’d picked La Liga over all the other big-money options that were on the table.

“I have rediscovered the joy of playing in La Liga. I wanted to come here after the 2022 World Cup, I knew it was the league that suited me best and that my style of play was perfectly adapted to La Liga.”

« J’ai retrouvé le plaisir du jeu en Liga 🇪🇸. Je voulais venir ici après la Coupe du monde 2022, je savais que c’était le championnat qui me convenait le mieux et que mon style de jeu était parfaitement adapté à la Liga 🇪🇸. Dès mon premier match avec… pic.twitter.com/zMAGoRNAKg

From the very get-go, he’s been given a lot of responsibility at the club. He started in the first match, played 82 minutes and impressed with his ball control and ability to pick up the pace of the game.

Just a few weeks later he scored his first goal for Girona against Athletic Bilbao and was named the club’s Player of the Month. Spanish sports outlet Marca even chose him in their team of the week for the sixth matchday.

He chose this club with the national team in mind as well. With big competitions on the horizon he knew he needed to keep up a good run of games to get his confidence up to a good level.

Ounahi’s early games in Girona colours have shown off the qualities that really suit him to La Liga: tight control, neat passing and agility in the middle of the park.

His choice of Girona — a team that loves to keep the ball, press high up the pitch and knock it about with a lot of technical skill was definitely a great one.
