Alex Ovechkin’s Son Steals the Show Scoring Four Goals in NHL-Heavy All-Star Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The MVP of Saturday’s Ovi Cup gala contest wasn’t Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin, but rather his 6-year-old son, Sergei.

Playing in a friendly all-star game at Mytishchi Arena in Moscow, the young Ovechkin scored four goals, including two in the opening period against New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin.

The game featured NHL veterans and other Russian players, and Sergei certainly looked right at home, helping Team Ovechkin defeat Pavel Datsyuk’s squad 11–7.

Sergei’s two first-period goals came off assists from his teammates, including Minnesota Wild star Kirill Kaprizov. Alex Ovechkin, who scored once in the game, watched from the bench as Sergei kept racking up goals.

“Of course, I am happy for my son. I see his progress, as well as Ilya’s,” Ovechkin told Match TV. “We will do everything so that Sergei continues in the same spirit. Many thanks to the participants. They came at the first call. This is a holiday for children. Next year will be much better.”

Sergei Ovechkin Enjoyed Some Star-Studded Support

The annual charity matchup featured a mix of current and former NHL talent, as Philadelphia Flyers forward Matvei Michkov scored twice for Team Ovechkin, while Kaprizov added one of his own. For Team Datsyuk, Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin recorded a hat trick.

Other participants included Vyacheslav Fetisov, Valeri Kamensky, Mikhail Sergachev, Dmitry Orlov, Kirill Marchenko and Egor Zamula.

The Ovi Cup is a youth hockey tournament that draws teams from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. Sergei, who first stepped onto the ice in 2020 at age 2, made his third appearance in the all-star game.

NHL legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Datsyuk joked about Ovechkin’s son after the game.

“We needed to defend another Ovi, but it didn’t work out,” Datsyuk said.

A Glimpse of the Ovechkin Family Future?

While Shesterkin obviously let a few of Sergei’s shots into his net, the performance is still impressive considering the kid’s age.

Ilya, Ovechkin’s younger son, was born in May 2020, two years after Sergei, and Alex revealed the two kids have opposite plans in mind when it comes to hockey.

“One guy wants to be a goalie, one guy wants to be a forward, so they play back and forth all the time,” Ovechkin said last December. “They play where each guy takes 10 shots, and then they switch.”
