Rabat– Agadir’s Mohammed VI University Hospital has marked a major milestone in Moroccan healthcare after successfully performing the country’s first urethral reconstruction using microsurgical techniques, the hospital announced on Thursday.

The groundbreaking procedure was carried out by the urology department on a patient in his seventies, under the supervision of Professor Imad Ziouziou. The operation represents an unprecedented achievement in Morocco’s urology field, introducing highly specialized microsurgery to treat complex urethral conditions.

According to the hospital’s statement, the intervention relied on advanced microsurgical methods using a high-precision surgical microscope. This approach allowed surgeons to reconstruct the urethra under optimal safety conditions and in line with the highest international medical standards. The success of the operation opens new therapeutic possibilities for patients suffering from complex urological disorders that previously required treatment abroad or involved higher risks.

The procedure was made possible through the close coordination of a multidisciplinary medical and paramedical team, supported by state-of-the-art technical equipment. Hospital officials highlighted that this achievement reflects the high level of preparation, expertise, and specialization reached by the Mohammed VI University Hospital of Agadir in complex surgical care.

The CHU emphasized that the operation aligns with its broader mission to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery and expand access to advanced medical treatments at the national level.

Through this achievement, the Mohammed VI University Hospital of Agadir reaffirmed its commitment to consolidating its position as a reference healthcare institution, while contributing to the medical prominence of Agadir and the Souss-Massa region across Morocco.

The hospital, which has a capacity of 867 beds, was built on a 30-hectare site near the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, with a built-up area of 127,000 square meters. The project mobilized investments estimated at MAD 3.1 billion.

Designed with a modern architectural vision, the Agadir CHU integrates cutting-edge medical technologies and adheres to sustainability and energy-efficiency standards, notably through the use of photovoltaic panels. As a public tertiary care institution, it fulfills missions related to treatment, training, research, expertise, innovation, and public health, positioning it at the forefront of Morocco’s evolving healthcare system.
