Rafinha Faces Possible Ban Over Refereeing Comments

Rabat – Barcelona winger Raphinha may face disciplinary action from UEFA after his strong criticism of refereeing in the Champions League quarter‑final against Atletico Madrid.

Although injured and absent from the match, Raphinha spoke to Brazilian media after Barcelona’s elimination, accusing officials of “stealing” the game.

His remarks have sparked debate and could lead to punishment under UEFA’s rules.

“It was a stolen match. The refereeing had many problems. The decisions made were not clear. Atletico committed several fouls and did not receive yellow cards. I want to understand why there is fear of Barcelona qualifying,” Raphinha said.

    UEFA Rules

The Brazilian winger’s comments may fall under Article 11 of UEFA’s disciplinary code, which covers “general principles of conduct.” The rule prohibits abusive behavior or anything that damages the reputation of football or UEFA.

UEFA regulations state that such remarks can result in suspensions of up to three matches in the Champions League. If imposed, the ban would apply next season.

There is precedent for this type of punishment. In 2019, Neymar was suspended for three matches after criticizing referees on social media following Paris Saint‑Germain’s loss to Manchester United.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport later reduced his ban to two games. Raphinha ’s case could follow a similar path if UEFA decides to act.

    Barcelona’s situation

Barcelona were knocked out by Atletico Madrid after failing to overturn their 2‑0 loss in the first leg, with the Catalans’ spirited 2-1 win in Madrid not enough to keep them in the continental tournament.

The match was marked by controversy, including a red card for Eric Garcia and several disputed decisions. Club president Joan Laporta has already announced plans to file another complaint to UEFA, calling the refereeing “a disgrace.”

Raphinha ’s words add to the tension around the club. While his frustration reflects the mood of many supporters, UEFA may view his comments as crossing the line.
