Morocco Secures Three Months of Fuel Supply

Agadir – Morocco’s minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Laila Benali, revealed today the national energy stock, with fuel supplies secured for the next three months.

The minister noted that Morocco’s fuel supply situation remains stable. Diesel stocks are sufficient for approximately 47 days of national consumption, while gasoline reserves extend beyond 49 days.

Benali pointed out during her speech in front of the House of Representatives that Morocco as all other countries is affected by the current war in the Middle East.

She cited the International Energy Agency (IEA) recent reports on the energy supplies, stressing that the current situation may exceed the impact of previous crises in 1970, 1979, and 2002.

The minister underlined that the ongoing instability is being felt most acutely through strategic maritime routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, through which more than 20% of global oil flows, alongside significant volumes of natural gas and other critical industrial inputs used in sectors such as pharmaceuticals and food production.

These disruptions result in experiencing higher costs in maritime insurance, transportation, and supply chain restructuring, which is reflected in global energy price volatility, with ripple effects across both importing and exporting countries.

In response to the current pressures, Benali said that the government has mobilized a financial package of approximately MAD 1.6 billion to support citizens’ purchasing power and stabilize key sectors.

This package is distributed across several measures, including MAD 600 million dedicated to butane gas subsidies, MAD 400 million supporting the electricity sector, and  approximately MAD 648 million per month allocated to transport professionals through fuel compensations (MAD 3 per liter)

Meanwhile, the minister reported that electricity tariffs are kept stable despite rising costs, sustained through continued public financial support estimated at around MAD 400 million monthly.

Morocco’s energy situation remains comparatively stable due to coordinated planning and diversified sourcing strategies, Benali emphasized, noting that the country relies on many sources for energy suppliers like the United States, South America, and several European countries.
