Agadir – Morocco signed the implementation agreement for the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Program (GEIPP II) yesterday, March 16.

The agreement brings together the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Swiss Government through SECO, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Minister Ryad Mezzour signed the agreement alongside Valentin Zellweger, Swiss Ambassador to Morocco, and Sanaa Lahlou, UNIDO representative in Morocco.

GEIPP II is based on the success of the Country Partnership Program (CPP Morocco) established between UNIDO and the trade ministry.

According to a press statement, the initiative seeks to “transform industrial zones into Eco-Industrial Parks where companies collaborate to optimize resource use,” creating industrial synergies and implementing circular economy solutions.

This aims to contribute to the development of a competitive, climate-resilient and thriving industrial sector.

The program is set to be implemented from 2026-2028, with a budget of CHF 3 million ($3.33 million), targets five industrial zones, including Atlantic Free Zone in Kenitra, Jorf Lasfar Industrial Zone in El Jadida, Ain Jouhara Industrial Complex in Khemisset, Tasila 1 & 2 in Agadir and Selouane Industrial Zone in Nador.

Besides the initial parks, the program’s goal is to design a national, scalable framework for eco-industrial park (EIP) development.

Mezzour stated that this aligns with existing public policies in partnership with World Bank Group and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

For her part, Lahlou stated during the event that this program aims to “transform Moroccan industrial zones into green and eco-friendly industrial areas.”

“The goal of this program is to reduce CO2 emissions, minimize waste, and support the sustainable use of raw materials and energy within industrial zones,” she added.

Overall, GEIPP Morocco states that it seeks to “promote circular economy approaches within industries,” in efforts to reduce the industrial sector’s climate footprint. The ultimate goal is to boost the capacity of industrial parks to combat effects of climate change.
