Rabat—Kuwait is mourning the death of former footballer Fahad Al‑Mejmed, who passed away at the age of 33 while on duty as a security officer, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Interior of Kuwait.

Al-Majmad died on March 6 while serving with Kuwait’s General Directorate of Land Border Security, where he held the rank of major. The ministry stated that he and Lieutenant-Colonel Abdullah Emad Al‑Sharrah were killed at dawn while carrying out national security duties. Both men were honored by authorities as “martyrs of duty.”

This tragic incident occurred during a period of heightened military tensions in the Gulf, ever since the US-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent war. Kuwait reinforced security measure across the region, particularly along the borders.

While official details about the precise circumstances of the incident remain limited, Kuwaiti authorities confirmed that the officers were killed while performing their national duty as part of ongoing security missions.

    Career in Kuwaiti football

Before his military service, Al-Mejmed was a respected figure in Kuwaiti football. The central defender began his career with Al-Qadsia SC, one of the country’s most successful clubs, before later playing for Kazma SC and eventually Al-Salmiya SC.

At Al-Salmiya, particularly from 2019 onward, he became one of the team’s defensive pillars and served as club captain for several seasons, earning recognition for his leadership on and off the pitch.

He retired from professional football only a few months before his death, announcing his decision during a match between Al-Salmiya SC and Al-Arabi SC, before dedicating himself fully to his military career.

Following the tragic news, Al-Salmiya SC, his former team, released a heartfelt statement mourning the loss of their former captain and teammate.

The club said: “With great sadness and sorrow, the president, board members, and all affiliates of Al-Salmiya Club extend their sincere condolences to the families of the two martyrs and to the Kuwaiti people following the death of Major Fahad Abdulaziz Al-Majmad, a player of Al-Salmiya Club, and Lieutenant-Colonel Abdullah Emad Al-Sharrah, who were martyred while performing their national duty.”

Tributes also came from Al Arabi SC, Al-Qadsia SC and the Kuwait Football Association.
