No School in Taza, Tangier-Assilah Today Due to Severe Weather

Rabat – Morocco’s provincial directorate of national education in the Tangier-Assilah region has announced it is cancelling classes in public and private schools across the prefecture today due to severe weather.

In a statement, the provincial directorate said the decision is to ensure the safety of students as well as administrative and teaching staff, noting that “The situation will be updated depending on the evolution of weather conditions.”

Yesterday, Taza authorities also announced the suspension of classes for today on in all private and public educational institutions due to weather, stressing the decision is in line with directives from the provincial monitoring unit in coordination with local authorities.

Morocco’s weather office announced continued stormy weather, including constant rain that has filled dams and rivers across the country.

Authorities are fearing rising water levels amid the continuous rainfall that are affecting several regions, including northern Morocco.

Several provincial directorates in Ouezzane, Al Hoceima, Chefchaouen, M’diq, Fnideq, Fahs-Anjra, and Larache had also announced the partial or total suspension of classes starting Monday through today.

On Tuesday, the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) said that an unusually intense storm is hitting northern Morocco, as a result of the strong contrast between cold polar air descending from North America and warm, humid subtropical air.

“This contrast strengthens the jet stream and enables large amounts of water vapor to be transported toward Western Europe and the Maghreb in the form of atmospheric rivers– a mechanism already discussed in our previous communications,” the weather office detailed.
