Rabat – The Mohammed VI Foundation for Sciences and Health (FM6SS) today hosted the official ceremony awarding Certivea’s Exceptional High Environmental Quality (HQE) certification to the Mohammed VI International University Hospital (HUIM6) in Rabat. The hospital received an exceptional rating, a distinction rarely achieved at the international level, including in Europe.
The recognition highlights the hospital’s excellence in environmental performance and the high quality of its infrastructure, meeting the most demanding international standards, particularly in terms of High Environmental Quality (HQE).

Two certificates were presented during the ceremony—one for the Mohammed VI International University Hospital and one for the Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences—handed over to Professor Youns BJIJOU, Deputy Director of the Foundation. The recognition underscores the project’s commitment to sustainability, environmental performance, and integration of renewable energy.
A verified, comprehensive approach
The HQE Exceptional certification recognizes the complex’s harmonious integration into its environment, energy efficiency, responsible water management, carbon footprint reduction, and optimized hospital waste management. It also acknowledges excellence in hospital hygiene, infection risk control, and reliability of critical installations.
Such recognition is rare for a hospital of this scale, positioning the Mohammed VI International University Hospital as a national benchmark for sustainable healthcare infrastructure and highlighting the Foundation’s leadership in developing environmentally responsible facilities.

“This complex stands out as both a hospital and a university of the future. It consists of three main blocks,” Professor Mohamed Adnaoui, President of Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences told Morocco World News (MWN). He said the first is a fully accredited and digitized university, while the second is a “forward-looking” hospital that features extensive automation. This hospital includes fully-automated biological labs, has robot-assisted surgeries and pharmacy.
Yet, Adnaoui said that the third, “energy block,” is the most significant for today’s achievement. “It’s a first of its kind in a hospital and reflects the Foundation’s strategic approach to ensuring that the university, hospital, and energy facilities are sustainable over time, serving citizens within the framework of King Mohammed VI’s policies on social care and mandatory health coverage,” he said.
He also noted the broader context of Moroccan hospital certification: “We have had the privilege of certifying both university hospitals in Casablanca — the CHU Bouskoura and CHU Sheikh Khalifa — under Canadian standards, as well as the Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences.”

On the significance of today’s award, Adnaoui said: “We are honored to receive Certivea certification. Certivea is an international accrediting body that focuses particularly on organizational sustainability and risk reduction in hospitals.”
He explained: “After a year of careful evaluation of key indicators, we have achieved the highest certification level, exceeding 85% of the required standards, which is considered ‘excellent.’ We are thrilled to receive this recognition, along with the two trophies awarded—one for the hospital and one for the university.”
A sustainable project from the outset
Designed from the beginning as a high-performance and sustainable hospital and university complex, the facility spans 280,000 m², includes 600 beds expandable to 1,000, over 30 medical and surgical departments, 24 high-tech operating rooms, and an integrated university. Completed in just 24 months, the complex prioritizes both patient and staff experience while meeting the most demanding international standards.
Environmental performance and energy efficiency were integrated into the project from the design stage, combining passive solutions, optimized building envelope, controlled solar gains, and on-site renewable energy production. The facility is equipped with 8,800 m² of photovoltaic panels, covering more than 10% of its energy needs and reducing carbon emissions by 40%.
The Certivea certification cements HUIM6’s position as a benchmark for healthcare infrastructure, combining advanced technology, sustainable design, and patient-centered services, and reflects Morocco’s ongoing investment in modern and environmentally responsible medical facilities.
