GNV to Strengthen Maritime Connections Between Spain, Morocco

Agadir – Ferry operator Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) has announced plans to expand and enhance its maritime routes between Spain and Morocco, introducing new vessels starting next summer to improve service between the two countries.

The initiative aims to improve maritime connectivity by introducing more modern vessels with higher passenger and cargo capacity on routes linking Spanish and Moroccan ports, reflecting growing demand and deeper cooperation in transport.

GNV’s CEO Matteo Catani said during the Madrid International Tourism Fair 2026, which took place from January 17-21that the company is coordinating closely with relevant authorities in both countries to ensure that the new vessels can begin regular operations by the summer season.

He emphasized the importance of working with port authorities, Spanish and Moroccan terminals, and diplomatic and ministerial institutions to improve both infrastructure and service quality.

According to Catani, the new ships are expected to significantly enhance travel conditions, particularly for Moroccans living abroad, who rely heavily on maritime transport during peak travel periods.

He added that the fleet renewal also supports GNV’s efforts to develop more environmentally sustainable maritime routes, with newer vessels offering improved energy efficiency and lower emissions.

Morocco – Spain efforts to expand maritime routes

GNV’s announcement comes amid broader efforts by Spain and Morocco to strengthen their maritime transport links, as part of a wider strategy to facilitate trade, logistics, and cross-border mobility.

In this context, the Port of Cádiz in Spain has reestablished a regular maritime connection with Morocco after more than a decade, with container services now linking Cádiz and Casablanca.

The renewed route is designed to support bilateral trade flows and reinforce logistical integration between the two countries.

Meanwhile, new freight transport services have been introduced between Tangier Med and the Port of Huelva, providing six weekly rotations dedicated to roll-on/roll-off freight, enhancing commercial connectivity.
