Rabat – Nigeria claimed third place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after beating Egypt in the bronze medal match.
The game ended 0-0 after regular time at Stade Mohammed V, but Nigeria won 4-2 in the penalty shootout.
Egypt struggled to create chances. They had slightly more possession (53%) and took five shots, but only one was on target.
Nigeria had four shots and looked sharper in key moments. Their expected goals (xG) was lower, but they made their chances count when it mattered.
In the shootout, Egypt missed their first two penalties, including one from Mohamed Salah. Nigeria stayed calm and converted four of their five kicks. Ademola Lookman scored the final penalty to seal the win.
Earlier in the match, Paul Onuachu thought he had scored for Nigeria in the 36th minute, but the goal was overturned by VAR.
Despite the loss, Egypt showed solid defense throughout the tournament. But in this match, Nigeria’s discipline and composure gave them the edge.
This result gives Nigeria the bronze medal, while Egypt finishes fourth. Both teams will now look ahead to the World Cup and future tournaments.
The final will be played tomorrow, Sunday, between Senegal and Morocco at Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. Kickoff is set for 20:00.
