Getting Around Morocco Like a Local: The Definitive Guide to Taxis

Taking a taxi can be a convenient and efficient way to get where you need to go around Marrakech. You may have heard about the country’s unique system of taxis. In Morocco, there are two types of taxis: petit taxis and grand taxis. Understanding the differences between these two types of taxis can be pretty helpful when it comes to planning your trip and getting around during your stay.

    Taxis in Morocco

    Petit Taxis in Morocco

Petit taxis are small, four-seater cars that are typically used for short trips within a city or town. These taxis are often brightly colored, and they can be easily spotted on the streets. Petit taxis are a convenient and affordable way to get around, and they’re often used by locals and tourists alike.

One thing to keep in mind with petit taxis is that they only operate within a specific area, known as a “zone.” This means that if you want to take a petit taxi from one city to another, or from one zone to another, you’ll need to switch to a grand taxi or a bus.

    Grand Taxis in Morocco

Grand taxis, on the other hand, are larger vehicles that are typically used for longer trips between cities or towns. These taxis are often Mercedes-Benz sedans, and they can carry up to six passengers. Grand taxis operate on a fixed-rate basis, which means that the price of your trip will be determined in advance.

One thing to be aware of with grand taxis is that they don’t run on a fixed schedule. In some cases, you may need to wait for a grand taxi to fill up before it can depart, which can take some time. Further, grand taxis may not always be available, especially in smaller towns or remote areas.

Petit vs. Grand Taxis in Morocco: Which Is Right for You?

When it comes to choosing between petit taxis and grand taxis, there are a few key things to consider. If you’re planning a short trip within a city or town, a petit taxi is usually the best option. These taxis are convenient, affordable, and easy to find. Yet, if you’re planning a longer trip between cities or towns, a grand taxi is typically the better choice. These taxis are more comfortable and offer a fixed rate, which can be helpful for budgeting purposes.

Altogether, both types of taxis offer convenient and affordable transportation options, they serve different purposes and operate in different ways. By familiarizing yourself with the unique taxi system in Morocco, you can make the most of your trip and ensure that you have a smooth and stress-free travel experience.

Taxi Scams in Marrakech and How to Avoid Them

Unfortunately, as Marrakchi I suffered a lot from taxi scams and how taxi drivers deal with passengers. Taxi scams are a common problem for both locals and tourists in Marrakech, Morocco.

Lately, I was scammed by a petit taxi driver who took me on a longer route to increase the fare. It was such a frustrating experience!

To avoid being scammed, it is important to be aware of the potential risks and to take steps to protect yourself. Some tips for avoiding taxi scams include:

    • First, Check the taxi’s meter to make sure it is running and that the fare is being calculated correctly.
    • Ask the driver for an estimate of the fare before you start your trip, so you have an idea of how much it should cost.
    • Avoiding taxis that are parked in tourist areas, as these are more likely to be overpriced.
    • Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe with a taxi driver, don’t hesitate to get out of the taxi and look for another one. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
    • Be aware of common scams. Some common scams to watch out for include taxi drivers who claim that your hotel is closed or full and offer to take you to a different hotel, or drivers who claim that they don’t have change and ask you to pay more than the agreed-upon price.
    • Research the going rates for taxi fares in the area you are traveling to, so you have an idea of what a fair price should be.

By following these tips, you can avoid being scammed by taxi drivers in Marrakech and have a smooth and enjoyable trip. Always remember to be cautious and trust your instincts, and you should have a wonderful time in this beautiful city.

    Book a Taxi in Marrakech

There are several ways to book a taxi in Marrakech. One option is to look for licensed taxi stands, which are usually located near major tourist attractions and hotels.

You can also call a taxi company, like Taxi Vert, to book a ride in advance.

I recently had the pleasure of using the services of a trustworthy and reliable taxi driver in my home town Marrakech. His name is Aziz, and he can be reached by phone or WhatsApp to pre-book a taxi before you arrive in Marrakech.

Aziz is a friendly and professional driver who makes sure his passengers are comfortable and happy with the service. He is knowledgeable about the city and can provide valuable information about the best places to visit and the best routes to take. He is also punctual and will make sure to arrive at your pickup location on time, every time.

In addition to his excellent driving skills and knowledge of the city, Aziz is also honest about the fares, and will never try to take you on a longer route to increase the fare. He is also very safety-conscious and will always make sure that you arrive at your destination safely.

I highly recommend Aziz. You can contact him by phone or WhatsApp to pre-book a taxi, and he will make sure to provide you with a comfortable and stress-free ride.
