Planning a trip to Morocco? If so then you need to stop by the best hammam in Marrakech.

See, a hammam is a traditional Moroccan public bath. Typically, hammams are separated by gender and involve sitting in a steam room, bathing with black soap, and using a Kessa (kess) to exfoliate all the dead skin off your body.

It’s a really nice experience and I always feel super relaxed after visiting some of the best hammams in Marrakech.

It’s also very Moroccan and I encourage everyone to go to the hammam since it’s a unique cultural experience that is still a very important part of modern Moroccan life.

I mean, my partner is Moroccan and he goes to the hammam at least once a month with friends and family. It’s a great way to relax and spend time with the important people in your life.

The only thing you need to do is decide whether you want to go to a private hammam or a public hammam while in Marrakech.

Generally, a private hammam is designed for tourists and is a more luxurious experience (i.e. more expensive) where a private assistant takes you through the entire process.

I have been to a bunch of private hammams in Marrakech and they are perfect for someone who wants to enjoy a hammam but who wants to bathe in private and who wants to feel like they are in a traditional western spa.

In contrast, a public hammam in Morocco is much cheaper and a much more authentic experience since these facilities are used by locals to practice this ancient bathing ritual.

However, it does involve nude bathing with members of the same gender and is not for everyone. The language barrier can also be an issue since foreigners are not familiar with the process and are not sure what to do at the public hammam.

I love going to the public hammam since I think the experience is much more authentic and offers guests much better value for their money. But, it’s a personal preference and there is no right or wrong answer.

Because I have been to many of the best public hammams in Marrakech and many of the best private hammams in Marrakech, I want to share my top local picks with you.

This way you can quickly and easily find the best hammams in Marrakech for you and your personal travel needs.

So, let’s swan dive into this local guide and find the best hammam for you during your next trip to Marrakech.

What to Expect at the Hammam

Before you visit the best hammam in Marrakech, let’s go over the bathing ritual and what the hammam looks like.

It’s important because a Moroccan hammam is probably very different from other public baths you’ve visited, which is why it’s one of the reasons to visit Marrakech.

Generally, a hammam consists of a hot room where you sit in steam and open up your pores, a warm room for scrubbing/bathing, and a cold room for relaxing and rehydrating after your treatment.

Typically, Moroccan hammams do not feature large pools of water since stagnant water is considered unclean by Muslims, making it unique and one of the best things to do in Marrakech.

Instead, you’ll find big rooms lined with faucets where you can collect water, which is why many locals bring large buckets to the public hammam.

The light inside the hammam is also fairly dim since natural light comes in through small windows near the dome of the roof.

Additionally, visiting the hammam is a very social activity that friends and family enjoy together. In fact, it is an expression of love to bathe someone else at the hammam.

Therefore, many Moroccans visit the hammam together at least once a week, usually on Thursdays or Fridays. This way they can purify themselves before attending Friday services at the mosque.

Hammams are also separated by gender since bathers are nude (except underwear) and use the hammam together.

Once you start bathing, the ritual will be the same whether you opt for a private hammam or a public hammam.

You’ll rinse off and then head to the hottest room in the hammam. You’ll bathe in black soap (made from olives) to soften the skin and get it ready for exfoliation.

After sitting in the hot room, you’ll go to the warm room and wash off the black soap before exfoliating the skin. You can either have an attendant do this for you or do this with friends and family at a public hammam.

Just use a kessa (kees) glove to scrub your body. Once all the dead skin has been rinsed off and removed, use a clay paste (Rhassoul” to rehydrate the skin. It is rinsed off and lemon or orange-scented water is applied to the body like a perfume.

Finally, head to the cold room where you can relax and rehydrate with mint tea or water. This is also when you can get an optional massage, although I find traditional Moroccan massages to be kind of weak.

If you opt for one, your masseuse will probably use argan oil on your body to protect your skin from the sun and dehydration. Just don’t visit with massive sunburn since the massage will hurt big time.

Yeah, this is one of the things not to do in Marrakech that I learned about the hard way.

    Public Hammams in Marrakech

If you’re looking for a reasonably priced, authentic hammam experience then a public hammam is a great choice. You’ll wear underwear into the hammam and need all of your own supplies.

So, bring a bowl for the water, a mat to sit on, black soap, a scrubbing glove, flip flops, a towel, a change of clothes, and any toiletries (shampoo/conditioner) for showering.

For most public hammams, it will cost you 30/40 Dirhams to enter and 60 Dirhams if you also want someone to scrub you down, making this one of the best budget-friendly things to do in Marrakech.

I loved my hammam experience at Hammam Mouassine since this is one of the oldest public hammams in Marrakech. I also thought the staff were really lovely even though they don’t really speak English.

I also like that while it is a public hammam they still provide you with everything you need for the treatment as attendants guide you through the entire ritual.

It’s nothing fancy but felt like a step above a public hammam. I also liked being guided through the process since I am not Moroccan and don’t know how to do the entire bathing ritual on my own.

I also like that your ticket has no set time and you can just show up whenever. You also don’t need to book a ticket in advance since the hammam is huge and easy to find since it’s located in the souks of Marrakech.

“I had a pleasant time at the hammam, though it could benefit from some refurbishment and more comfortable seating options. The drainage system needs improvement to avoid unhygienic conditions caused by floating dead skin in the flooding the floor. The building is quite old, and the bathing room lacks sufficient lighting. However, the staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming. Overall, my experience was positive, but I may consider trying a more modern hammam next time.”

That being said, this hammam in Marrakech does feel a bit touristy since the majority of patrons are foreign.

But, I thought the experience provided great value for money and was a nice introduction to an authentic Moroccan hammam experience.

And while the ticket I bought from Get Your Guide does not include a massage, you can add one to the end of your visit. They also have mint tea for you to drink with the entire experience lasting around 1.5 hours.

Therefore, I would visit again the next time I spend four days in Marrakech. It’s also well-located near some of the best rooftop restaurants in Marrakech. So, be sure to grab something to eat after your visit.

    2. Hammam Essalama

This public hammam is a great place to visit either before or after a trip to Jardin Majorelle since it is well-located near this Marrakech landmark.

It’s also a bit more authentic than Hammam Mouassine since you’ll likely be the only non-local there. For 150 Dirhams ($15.00) you can splurge on the VIP experience and go into a separate room for your treatment.

It includes a scrub, mask, massage, and tea for a very reasonable price. However, if you want an authentic experience then opt for the regular package for 120 Dirhams ($12.00).

It includes entrance to the hammam, soap, a massage, and a towel, but allows you to engage in the ritual with other people.

Just bring lotion for the end of the treatment and be sure to wear underwear. You can also get gloves/soap on-site and store your belongings in a locker.

    3. Hammam Nilo

One of the most common questions I get is, “Where can I find an authentic, local hammam in Marrakech?”

Well, now I can enthusiastically say that Hammam Nilo is the hammam you’re looking for if you want a traditional, super authentic experience.

But, before I go any further, let me be very clear. There is nothing luxurious about this place. Most of the staff also do not speak English.

So, if you’re okay with that then get ready to sit on a plastic chair in the steam room as you wait for your personal attendant to lather you up with black soap, clay, and orange blossom shampoo,

They’ll then wash you off with hot water and even do your hair if you select one of their higher-end packages.

In total, you have 8 different hammam packages to choose from. They range in price from 150 Dirhams to 1240 Dirhams. I went for the Hammam Relaxation Package for 350 Dirhams.

It included black soap with herbs, scrubbing with an exfoliating glove, soap (orange blossom gel), and Ghassaoul clay for my body/face.

I enjoyed my treatment and thought it felt pretty authentic since I saw a bunch of locals using the hammam as well. I also like that you got a basket with sandals, disposable underwear, black soap, and a kessa (exfoliating glove).

All in all, I thought my attendant was super nice and did a great job of taking me through the process. I just wish that the hammam had been a bit warmer since I got chilly during my treatment.

But, this is a great place to go if you are looking for one of the best hammams in Marrakech and want to escape some of the touristy things to do in Marrakech.

    Private Hammams in Marrakech

If you are looking for a more opulent experience or don’t feel like being naked with a ton of other people then a private hammam in Marrakech is a great choice.

It gives you the chance to experience what a Moroccan hammam is really like, but you can bathe in a private room and enjoy help from a personal assistant.

This way you don’t have to buy all of your own supplies and will have someone on hand to walk you through the process.

Due to the high-quality service, private hammams are much more expensive and can cost upwards of 500 Dirhams ($50.00) per person.

If you can, try and wait to visit the hammam in Essaouira vs. Marrakech since the ones in Essaouira will be a lot cheaper.

    4. Le Bain Bleu Marrakech

A hand holding a plastic, see-through bag with blue lettering that says, "Le Balin Bleu" on it. This is a Hammam in Marrakech.A hand holding a plastic, see-through bag with blue lettering that says, "Le Balin Bleu" on it. This is a Hammam in Marrakech.

The first time I visited Marrakech I stopped by Le Bain Bleu and booked one of their combination hammam and massage packages.

I went with the Stimulating Hammam and Massage package for 880 Dirhams. For two hours I relaxed in a warm room and was exfoliated, cleansed with black soap, and refreshed with eucalyptus.

After the hammam treatment, I was given a massage with argan oil. All in all, the staff are lovely and the facility provides visitors with a bit of calm amidst the chaos of the city.

You can also book at the last minute since I stopped by the night before to reserve my treatment.

Just be aware that traditional Moroccan massages are not deep tissue massages. So, the massage can feel a bit light to a lot of foreigners.

Overall, I did like this pick for the best hammam in Marrakech. However, I think the public hammams offer guests better value for their money.

    5. Les Bains de Tarabel

Les Bains de Tarabel is a nice hammam in Marrakech but not my favorite. Yes, the space is lovely and features modern Western designs tucked away inside an old-school Moroccan riad.

But, I think the treatments are a bit overpriced and limited since you can only select one 45-minute hammam package for 500 Dirhams ($50.00).

Yes, it includes a foot bath, a bath with black soap, and exfoliation with a Kessa glove, but so does every other spa treatment on the list. Plus, the foot bath is really short and they don’t have a separate area for men and women.

Yeah, I felt a little weird being semi-undressed in front of men.

However, you can choose from several other treatments like massages, facials, manicures, and pedicures. Not a fan of the massages here though since I don’t think they know what they are doing and are super light.

All in all, I would visit if you don’t have any other options. However, try to book a treatment in advance at another hammam instead.

    6. Les Bains de Marrakech

A large silver tea pot sits on a metal tray with a small, clear glass with int and a small, clear glass with tea.A large silver tea pot sits on a metal tray with a small, clear glass with int and a small, clear glass with tea.

Located right near the Saadian Tombs, Les Bains de Marrakech was founded in 2002 and is a good choice if you’re looking for a nice Marrakech hammam in the Kasbah area.

This facility has a tranquil, Asian feel with stained-glass windows, vibrant lanterns, and stucco interiors.

Highlights include treatment rooms for couples, an outdoor swimming pool, multiple hammam cabins, massages, facial treatments, and body wraps.

This place is super popular though so be sure to make a reservation in advance.

Just head to their website and choose between The Escape (1 hour and 550 Dirhams), the Legacy (2 hours and 900 Dirhams), the Timeless (3 hours and 1300 Dirhams), and Extravagance (4 hours and 1600 Dirhams).

Regardless of the package you choose, your visit will end in a rest room where you can relax with a traditional Moroccan mint tea and dig into some homemade pastries.

All in all, I think the staff are amazing and make you feel relaxed and comfortable. Service is also prompt and professional. Therefore, I would come back since it’s a great place to chill after a long day in Marrakech.

    7. Spa Royal Mansour Marrakech

If you want to enjoy a super high-end experience, then visit the Spa Royal Mansour Marrakech since this is the best hammam in Marrakech.

Yeah, Royal Mansour is a next-level opulent luxury hotel that is home to a stunning facility with elaborate white marble courtyards that will make you feel like royalty.

Highlights include a heated indoor pool surrounded by plush lounge chairs, ten unique spa rooms, and three spa suites where you can enjoy Hammam treatments for between 1400 Dirhams ($140.00) and 2000 Dirhams ($200.00) each.

So, get ready to lie down on warm marble tiles as you are bathed in warm water and your skin is adorned with amazing marocMaroc brand products.

You’ll then enjoy a rhassoul scrub made of rose, basil, chamomile, eucalyptus, lavender, and argan powder that will leave your skin feeling soft and refreshed.

However, treatments and masks can be customized to suit your skin type and personal preferences, with the entire process lasting anywhere between one hour and ninety minutes.

They also have a ton of treatments available and you can opt for facials, massages, and even weight loss treatments.

Yes, it’s expensive but you get what you pay for and will enjoy top-notch, 5-star service from start to finish. I would also visit early so that you can check out the amazing gardens on-site before you head to the hammam.

Local Tip: Visit this spa during Christmas in Marrakech or Christmas in Morocco and you’ll be able to see all of the hotels awesome Christmas decorations.

    8. Hammam de la Rose

Sign for Hammam de la Rose. The sign has a wooden frame and a gray rose on a white background with the words hammam de la rose on the sign. This is one of the best hammams in Marrakeh.

This is easily one of the most popular hammams in Marrakech. So, make a reservation before you visit. The decor is also lovely and features vibrant rooms with bathing areas lined with elaborate tiled mosaics.

I also love that they have a wide variety of treatments to choose from. Therefore, you can get a massage, do some waxing, get your hair done, or enjoy a facial before indulging in a traditional hammam experience.

The prices at this hammam in Marrakech are also super reasonable, even if the treatments are a bit short. So, you can opt for anything from a 30-minute treatment for 300 Dirhams to a 50-minute treatment for 500 Dirhams.

Enjoy supreme relaxation as hot water is poured delicately over your body while you are exfoliated and your skin is nourished with a unique honey and argan oil mask.

TBH, the last time I visited everything felt super rushed and not relaxing. The scrubbing was also intense and not gentle. The oil application was also really quick. Yeah, this place used to be a lot better and maybe I just went on an off day.

But, I would definitely recommend other Marrakech hammams on this list over this place.

    9. Farnatchi Spa

Located inside a stunning riad near Ben Youssef Madrasa, Farnatchi Spa is a high-end facility with a beautiful central courtyard filled with stunning, zellij tiles.

Their spa also features two hammams filled with marble benches where you can sit down as your personal attendant performs the ancient hammam ritual.

I love this hammam for a couple of reasons. First of all, they are not stingy and will happily give you extra slippers or tea and cookies.

Secondly, the staff are super friendly and walk you through the entire process, explaining everything they are going to do before they do it. I honestly could not have asked for a better hammam experience and think it was worth every penny.

All you need to do is decide what treatments you want. They have massages, facials, hammam experiences, and more.

I opted for the anti-aging care package as well as the Royal Hammam. The hammam treatment was an hour long and included a light massage.

However, they have a bunch of hammam packages that cost between 400 Dirhams and 650 Dirhams each.

Additionally, if you are going to book a massage in Marrakech then this is the place to go since the massage therapists here are like straight-up magicians with their hands.

Yeah, this is the only place I go for a massage since the therapists offer deep massages that get the knots out of your back. Just be sure to use their website to book your treatment in advance.

    10. The Four Seasons Spa

A view of a white sink with a vibrant tile backsplash on a counter with towles at the best hammam in Marrakech. A view of a white sink with a vibrant tile backsplash on a counter with towles at the best hammam in Marrakech.

Anyone who hears “Four Seasons” knows that they are in for the ultimate luxury experience.

The Four Seasons Spa in Marrakech is no exception since this traditional hammam sits inside its own building and comes complete with resplendent relaxation gardens that guests are welcome to enjoy.

Separate bathing facilities are designed for men and women and include a sauna, a hammam room, and a cold plunge pool.

There’s even a jacuzzi as well as a private hammam suite and upwards of 15 treatment rooms, one of which is designed for couples.

A wide variety of services are also on offer, including waxing, facials, massages, manicures, and pedicures. There’s even a special spa designed with kids and teens in mind.

When it comes to Hammam packages, choose between the Authentic Hammam (45 minutes and 1000 Dirhams) or the Escape Hamman by marocMaroc (60 minutes and 1300 Dirhams).

The latter is unique because it includes exfoliation with a detoxifying body scrub as well as cleansing with an orange blossom shower gel. It’s one of the coolest things to do in Marrakech if you’re looking for a truly luxurious experience.

    11. La Mamounia

La Mamounia is another one of the best hotels in Marrakech that is home to an insane, 2,500 square meter spa where you can enjoy an amazing hammam experience.

It’s an exquisite place where you can relax inside one of two traditional hammams. There is also a private hammam as well as ten treatment rooms, a heated pool, and a jacuzzi.

In terms of services, the spa has a wide range of options available including facials, massages, manicures, pedicures, and hair styling.

However, the real highlight of any visit is a trip to the hammam, where you can relax and escape from a chaotic 2 days in Marrakech.

You’ll start with a ritualistic black soap cleansing, with eucalyptus, followed by exfoliation and a ghassoul body wrap. In total, the treatment takes around one hour and costs 1300 Dirhams ($130.00).

Alternatively, try the Hammam Evasion for 1500 Dirhams ($150.00) or the Hammam Royal for 2500 Dirhams ($250.00). The Hammam Royal experience lasts two hours and includes a massage as well as a hammam treatment.

Personally, I think La Mamounia is a bit overrated. But, a lot of people love it which is why I put it on this list. Also, be sure to dress up so that you can visit the amazing on-site bar and restaurant after.

Yeah, their restaurant easily serves a top contender for the best brunch in Marrakech.

    12. Les Bains D’Orient

A central table sits in a light rooms in the hammam. There are sinks on the wall with tile mosaics around them at the best hammam in Marrakech. A central table sits in a light rooms in the hammam. There are sinks on the wall with tile mosaics around them at the best hammam in Marrakech.

I love Les Bains D’Orient since it is one of the best budget-friendly hammams in Marrakech. It’s also one of the few places I have been where I thought the massage was strong enough.

Just be sure to book in advance and make a payment online to secure your reservation since this place is popular.

But, that’s understandable since the facility is super clean and the staff are very friendly. There are also lockers where you can store your stuff during your treatment.

In terms of the Hammam, you can choose between the Traditional Hammam (35 minutes and 270 Dirhams), the Hammam Sublime (45 minutes and 320 Dirhams), the Hammam Etoile de Sud (50 minutes and 370 Dirhams), and the Hammam Le Bains d’Orient (55 minutes and 430 Dirhams.

However, I’d opt for one of their combined hammam and massage packages, like the Cérémonial Les Bains d’Orient.

It’s next-level amazing, lasts two hours, and costs 850 Dirhams ($85.00). it is only available from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm but includes a 30-minute hammam treatment, a 60-minute massage, a 10-minute facial, and a 15-minute bath in rose milk.

Yeah, it’s super luxe and just a great way to try a bunch of different treatments. I also think this is one of the best hammams in Marrakech that offers exceptional value for what you pay.

It’s also one of the best things to do alone in Marrakech if you are a solo female traveler in Marrakech.

    13. Al Ksar Riad & Spa

After living in Marrakech for a while, you start to get picky about hammams. You know exactly what to expect and kind of want the best experience possible.

Well, Al Ksar Riad & Spa is one I genuinely recommend to friends when they visit. I love that it’s tucked away insice the Medina but still feels calm from the moment you walk in.

Yup, that alone sets it apart from some of the other hammams that I have been to. Let’s just say some other places are not nearly as relaxing.

Anyway, this hammam is the real deal. It’s warm, steamy, chill, and deeply relaxing. The traditional black soap scrub is thorough (yes, you’ll leave a pile of dead skin behind) and followed by a soothing rinse that makes you feel brand new.

What I love most, though, is that they don’t rush you. Instead, you’re given plenty of time to actually relax and are not rushed from one room to the next.

They also offer a range of packages that combine your hammam experience with massages, facials, or body treatments. This way it is easy to tailor your experience to suit your person needs.

I’ve tried a bunch of different things here, and the longer packages are absolutely worth it if you have the time.

    14. Riad Elisa and Spa

When you’ve been living in Marrakech as long as I have, you quickly realize that not all hammams are created equal.

Thankfully, though, Riad Elisa and Spa is one I keep coming back to again and again. Located in the medina, this hammam feels intimate and calm.

It feels way more like a private retreat than a busy spa. Plus, from the moment you step inside, everything slows down in the best way.

The hammam itself is wonderfully traditional but has been designed with real care. The steam room is warm and soothing, followed by a proper black soap scrub that leaves your skin unbelievably soft.

What stands out is the attention you receive as a guest. You never feel rushed, and the staff are very welcoming. They take their time and make the entire experience feel personal as opposed to routine.

Now, Riad Elisa has several packages that combine the hammam with massages, facials, and body treatments. So, it’s easy to spend an afternoon at their on-site spa.

Their signature packages are especially nice if you want to unplug for a few hours. I’ve also found the massages to be excellent. They are firm and relaxing but not so firm that they cause you pain (been there and it is awful).
