Rabat – Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragui said on Saturday in Rabat that the national team will give everything to achieve its main goal, which is winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the opening match against Comoros at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Regragui stated that the players are fully aware of the responsibility they carry. “We know how big this responsibility is. Our goal is to win the trophy, and the players are ready to give a strong performance in this important African competition,” he said.

Regragui explained that the team is taking the tournament one match at a time, starting with the game against Comoros. He spoke about the importance of staying calm despite high expectations. “Every match is important because we represent Morocco. Expectations are high, but the players must stay calm, confident, and respectful of the opponent,” he noted.

Regarding injuries affecting some players, the coach said the team must adapt to difficulties that appear at the last moment. He added that the squad has been preparing together for a long time, and these unexpected situations push everyone to be ready. “Every player who is selected will be prepared to do his job,” Regragui said.

He also noted the strong mentality within the group. “We have the desire and belief to win. We want to keep this mindset so Moroccan football stays at the top and continues to fight for titles,” he stated. While admitting that Morocco is considered one of the favorites, Regragui said the pressure is positive. “Yes, there is pressure, but it helps us manage our effort, our game, and our mental strength better.”

“Fans should cheer, not just take photos”

The coach also sent a clear message to supporters, calling on them to actively support the team during matches. “We want fans who come to encourage (the players), not just to take photos or eat sweets,” he said.

Drawing on his experience with Wydad Casablanca, Regragui explained that strong fan support has a direct impact on players’ performance. “I hope tomorrow the players won’t even hear my voice because of the fans’ passion. Their support lifts the team and gives them extra energy on the pitch,” he added.

Regragui confirmed that the pressure from the home crowd is positive and serves as extra motivation for the Atlas Lions, who are aiming for a strong start as they chase a continental title that has been absent from Morocco’s trophy cabinet for many years.
