Rabat – Residents of a private university campus in Settat were thrown into panic yesterday evening following the appearance of “worrisome” structural cracks.

Videos widely shared on social media show visible fissures inside several student housing units, sparking fear among occupants about potential collapses or other safety hazards.

Many students left the residence voluntarily, citing concerns for their immediate safety.

Local authorities, who inspected the site, have ordered the evacuation of at least two dormitory blocks while technical assessments are carried out to evaluate the structural integrity of the buildings.

The incident also raised concern among students’ families, with several parents traveling from different cities to retrieve their children and place them in safer locations.

No injuries have been reported so far, and authorities have urged calm as safety inspections continue.

Social media reactions to the residence incident have been intense, with many users expressing shock and concern over the apparent structural flaws.

Commenters criticized the management of the private campus for failing to ensure students’ safety. Some parents called for stricter inspections of private educational facilities, and several students posted messages urging authorities to act quickly to prevent any accidents.

The incident in Settat adds to growing concerns about the state of infrastructure in Morocco, particularly in the construction and maintenance of residential and educational buildings.

In recent weeks, the country has witnessed multiple alarming cases, including the collapse of two buildings in Fez, noting systemic issues in construction standards and oversight.

Experts and citizens alike are pointing to these repeated incidents as evidence of the urgent need for stricter regulations, regular inspections, and stronger enforcement to prevent further tragedies.
