Rabat – Wydad Casablanca moved a step closer to the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinals after beating Nairobi United 1-0 away from home on Sunday in the fifth round of the group stage.
The game stayed goalless for most of the game, with both sides struggling to break through. Wydad kept pushing and finally found the winner in the 89th minute when Wissam Ben Yedder struck to secure all three points.
The result keeps Wydad on top of Group B with 12 points. Maniema Union of Congo follow in second place with nine points, while Azam United of Nigeria also sit on nine. Nairobi United remain bottom of the group with no points after five matches.
This win puts Wydad in a strong position to qualify for the next round. Even a draw in their final group game could be enough to confirm their place in the quarterfinals.
This win comes after a mixed run of results in the group stage. Wydad lost 2-1 away to Maniema Union on February 1, but earlier defeated Maniema 1-0 at home on January 25.
They also beat Azam 1-0 away in November and crushed Nairobi 3-0 at home in the same month.
The latest win shows their ability to bounce back after setbacks and maintain control of the group.
The team will host Azam United at Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca next Sunday, a match that could decide who finishes first in the group.
