Rabat – Morocco earned a prestigious tribute from the Washington Educational and Cultural Attachés Association (WECAA) during its spring session in the US capital, held as the America marks 250 years of independence.
The recognition celebrates Morocco’s historic distinction as the first country to recognize the newly formed American Republic in 1777, a milestone that laid the foundation for a relationship that has grown stronger over two and a half centuries.
Moroccan Ambassador to the US, Youssef Amrani, received on Friday the Ambassador of the Year award, an honor granted annually by WECAA to a diplomat who demonstrates outstanding contribution to the Washington diplomatic community.
The award was presented by Jan Du Plain, president of Du Plain Global Enterprises, an organization known for coordinating high-level diplomatic initiatives, and was attended by notable figures including Guatemala’s First Lady, Lucrecia Eugenia Peinado Villanueva.
Du Plain commended Morocco as a model of stability and partnership, noting that the North African country remains a reliable ally of the US.
She also pointed to Morocco’s consistent support for cultural exchange and efforts to strengthen multicultural dialogue, while reflecting on the enduring strategic alliance between Rabat and Washington.
‘A relationship unlike any other’
The ceremony spotlighted Amrani’s role in shaping Washington’s cultural discourse and the Embassy’s influence through events that celebrate the deep-rooted ties between the two nations.
“This award recognizes His Majesty’s ambassador for his exceptional diplomatic career and the energy he has brought to the US capital since assuming his post in 2024,” Du Plain said.
Ambassador Amrani expressed gratitude for the recognition, calling it a reflection of the historic and strategic relationship between Morocco and the US.
“I accept this recognition with a lot of humility… on behalf of the Kingdom of Morocco,” he said.
He noted that the ties between the two countries continue to strengthen, contributing to economic and cultural progress as well as to global peace and security.
The Moroccan ambassador added that both King Mohammed VI and US President Donald Trump have prioritized reinforcing this unique alliance, ensuring that the partnership not only endures but also grows in depth and scope.
“Our relationship looks to the future with confidence while honoring a shared history that spans more than two centuries,” Amrani said. “This distinction is not merely personal. It is a reflection of a relationship unlike any other.”
Over two and a half centuries, this alliance has evolved into a multi-dimensional relationship spanning diplomacy, trade, security, and culture.
Both countries have consistently reinforced their ties through high-level exchanges, strategic cooperation, and shared initiatives that promote regional stability and economic growth.
The relationship marked a major milestone in 2020, when the US officially recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in the Western Sahara, backing the Autonomy Plan and laying further foundation for other major global powers to follow.
Morocco’s role as a reliable partner in the region, coupled with a commitment to dialogue and mutual respect, has made the Rabat-Washington connection a model of enduring transatlantic partnership.
